Qualitative Research in Nursing Practice Essays

Which method of research provides the best evidence for nursing practice? Is there a place for both quantitative and qualitative research in evidence-based practice? How do these research methods improve patient outcomes?

Return to and reflect on your thoughts and postings from Week 1’s Discussion on the respective characteristics, strengths, and limitations of quantitative and qualitative research. Consider the uses of each type of research in the health care field. Also reflect on the amount of quantitative versus qualitative research that exists in the health care field in particular. There is an impression among some researchers that qualitative research is inferior to, easier than, or not as rigorous as quantitative research.

In this Discussion, you consider the idea of rigor, or thoroughness and scope of study, with regard to qualitative research. You examine the methods of qualitative research outlined and recommended in this week’s Learning Resources and how they aim to create standards of rigor by which to assess qualitative studies. You also have the opportunity to assess an article of your choice in terms of rigor and recommended methods of qualitative data collection.

    To prepare:

Consider      your readings about and understanding of quantitative and qualitative      research. If you had to choose, which type of research (quantitative or      qualitative) do you think is more rigorous and why? Do you think it is      useful to make such generalizations and comparisons?

Locate      an article describing a qualitative research study related to a health      care topic (see attached PDF).

Formulate      a research question to address the problem and that would lead you to      employ correlational statistics.

With      information from the Learning Resources in mind, critically analyze your      selected study. Ask yourself: How rigorous was the study in terms of the      researchers’ efforts, the data collected, and the conclusions drawn? What      might the researchers have done to improve the rigor?

By tomorrow Tuesday October 31, 2017 by 8 pm, write a minimum of 550 words essay in APA format with at least 3 references. Include the level one headings as numbered below:

    Post
a cohesive response that addresses the following:

    1) Do you think there is one type of research (quantitative or qualitative) that is inherently more rigorous than the other? If so, identify which one and why. If not, discuss your reasoning.

    2) Post a brief summary of your research article analysis and the correct APA citation for the article (See attached PDF).

    3) Outline how the study’s qualitative data collection and analysis did, or did not, promote rigor, provide scientific or systematic scaffolding, and/or generate a more thorough analysis of the research topic.

(Impact of Music in Neonatal Development)

    Abstract

Background: The physiological development of preterm infants seems to be improved with music stimulation. Studies have shown live music therapy is more beneficial music than recorded music and no music therapy during the recording of physiological and behavior of preterm infant in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to show how the impact of live music therapy has on neonatal development.

Method: Thirty-one stable infants randomly received live music, recorded music, and no music therapy over 3 consecutive days. A control of the environment noise level was imposed. Each therapy was delivered for 30 minutes. Heart rate, respiratory rate, oxygen, saturation and a behavioral assessment were recorded, every 5 minutes, actively awake and aroused; 6, quite awake or alert; 5, actively awake and aroused; 6, highly aroused, upset, or crying; and 7, prolonged respiratory pause > 8 seconds. Parents and medical personnel completed a brief questionnaire indicating the effect of the three therapies.

Results: Live music therapy had no significant effect on physiological and behavioral parameters during the 30-minute therapy; however, at the 30-minute interval after the therapy ended, it significantly reduced heart rate and improved the behavioral score Recorded music and no music therapies had no significant effect on any of the tested parameters during all intervals. Both medical personnel and parents preferred live music therapy to recorded music and no music therapies.

Conclusion: Compared with recorded music or no music therapy, live music therapy is associated with a reduced heart rate and a deeper sleep at 30 minutes after therapy in stable preterm infants. Both recorded and no music therapies had no significant effect on the tested physiological and behavioral parameters

Peer Interview in different health discipline

What is your role as a health care team member?

I am a Telemetry nurse full time in a 148-bed hospital. My role includes monitoring a patient’s heart by way of Electrocardiogram. I generally provide care for patients with chronic conditions. For example, diabetes, heart failure, kidney failure. I also get many acute patients status post procedures. For example, open lap cholecystectomy, appendectomy or even hysterectomy. I also handle passing medications as well as coordinating their care after discharge. I am also an Emergency department nurse Per diem at a different hospital. My role there includes triage in which I must understand how severe my patient is and figure out their history and events that led to their visit, getting baseline vitals, providing them with needed treatment. Often, we make our own medication in the ED and that was something very new to me coming from a Telemetry background. A lot of monitoring goes on with ED nurses because we are often waiting for them to be admitted to the hospital and we can have an ICU patient on the floor for several days. I also do a lot of charting and discharges.

How do you define professionalism and how does professional responsibility influence your work?

There are many qualities that embody a professional. I think the most important one is their special knowledge in their field of expertise. They are also competent, they make sure the job gets done and gets done right. They are accountable and have what is called self-regulation. Self-regulation is the ability to stay professional under pressure. Lastly a professional has proper image. They lead by example by dressing appropriately and not cursing, being late to work or leaving with-out the job being fully done. Professionalism is my rule to leave by. I do fall short at times when I am on my 5
    th
day straight and I am just losing my energy. My attitude can slip, and I may complain about my patients. I am working on self-regulation and plan to continue to improve as a professional.

Do you consider leaders in your organization stewards of health care? Why or Why not?

The apostle Paul explains it best by saying, “For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, God’s building” (1 Corinthians 3:9). Starting with this concept, we are then able to accurately view and correctly value not only our possessions, but, more importantly, human life itself. I have also considered myself of steward not only in healthcare but in life. I have always valued life in all forms and believe every life not just human life is to be valued. Being a steward in healthcare can be a challenge. For example, I had a patient who treated me so poorly and was racist. I despise racism with all my being. In that moment I had to set aside my personal views and be selfless. It was my duty to provide her the best care possible and ensure the best patient outcomes.

Is it important to you that leaders exercise professional advocacy and authenticity as well as power and influence when working with colleagues? Why or why not
    ?”

It is crucial leaders lead with these qualities. I don’t think its possible to call someone or myself a leader and not demonstrate these qualities. As nurses we must always advocate for not only our patients but fellow staff, if we are not professional how can we lead anyone to greatness? We have a charge nurse at our job I don’t understand how she is still employed. She doesn’t follow dress code, she talks loud about inappropriately and we are a teaching hospital, so we get new nurses every 8 weeks. It kills me to see these new nurses learn behavior like that. Being authentic is with-out a doubt important. I can spot a fake person a mile away. If your staff doesn’t trust you how or why would they follow you?
