    Third-party Payment from

Healthcare is driven not by patient care but by insurance companies. The patient is no longer considered the customer, insurance companies and our government are the customers (Stafford, 2012).  Private insurance companies are often referred to as third-party payers (U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. (n.d.). According to Stafford, “Third-party payers have so many requirements and expectations that they crowd out whatever time, energy, and resources might otherwise be focused on patient care” (2012). The third-party payment system has also made it difficult for some physicians to remain in practice because of rising costs and demands associated with third-party payers (Stafford, 2012).  A study showed that third-party payers complicated the discharge process when the hope was that it would make things smoother and more efficient (Drew, Angeli, Dave & Pavlova, 2016). Basically when a third-party payer is involved, there is no specifics about costs for treatments and supplies.

Medicare somewhat sets the standards for reimbursements for other private insurance companies to follow (Nickitas, Middaugh & Aries, 2014).  It is also the plan that provides health insurance coverage for our elderly aged 65 and older. Unfortunately, our elderly population deal with many different health conditions that can be very costly to the private insurance sector (Nickitas, Middaugh & Aries, 2014). Another factor is that most elderly are retired and not working anymore which does not qualify them to take in employer sponsored health insurance plans that help offset costs to the consumer.

  • What factors affect hospital catheter acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in the adult critical care population

What factors affect hospital catheter acquired urinary tract infections (CAUTI) in the adult critical care population

    Problem Statement

The healthcare field has been instrumental in offering care, support, and treatment to patients suffering from various illnesses.  Patients require care in variety of levels; ranging from standard to critical care. CAUTIs are one of the most common hospital acquired infections (HAI) associated with the critical patient. Urinary tract infections (UTI) are a great concern for the intensive care unit (ICU) patient due to the common use of inserting indwelling urinary catheters. Indwelling urinary catheters are necessary in the ICU population for accurate measurements of urine output and core temperature (Temiz et al., 2012). The use of an indwelling urinary catheter increases the risk of the critically ill patient to acquire UTIs as compared to other patient populations. According to Lee, Kim and Cho (2013) the presence of indwelling urinary catheter in critical care patients makes them vulnerable to CAUTI. Lee et al (2013) states that due to the effects of the indwelling catheter, which are more critical at this stage of illness. There are several studies that focus on CAUTI within the acute care setting, but few studies explore the critical care adult population. Daniels, Lee & Frei (2014) studied the trend of CAUTI within the acute adult care setting in a nine-year time frame. Increased catheterization in the ICU adult patients facilitate the occurrence of bacterium in the urinary catheter. This increases the risk of the critical care patient acquiring CAUTI as the duration of the patient’s stay in ICU increases (Derya-Keten & Keten, 2014)

The purpose of this research question is to explore the factors that affect hospital acquired CAUTI in the adult critical care population.

    Discussion Topic 1: Third-party Payment

In health care, third party payments are derived from insurance companies. Insurance companies have driven up the price of health care, therefore “distorting” the market. Insurance companies can only cover insurable risk. For example, getting hit by a car is an insurable risk because the chance of such an occurrence is small, but the required medical services are too expensive for many individuals to afford, so insurance companies spread the risk over a large group to make the premiums are affordable (Buff & Terrell, n.d.). The problem is that many of the services covered by health insurance do not fit this definition, and instead involve predictable expenses or minor care (Buff & Terrell, n.d.). It is in my opinion that wealthy countries continue to encourage the use third party payors to promote incentive to consumers with coverage, while using their premiums to add to the wealth, and unfortunately driving up the cost of health care in general.

Despite general improvements in the economic situation of the elderly population over the last 3 decades, many elderly Americans continue to struggle to pay living expenses on low or modest incomes (Rowland & Lyons, n.d.). When medical care is needed, these 6 million poor and near-poor elderly Americans depend on Medicare for assistance with their medical bills (Rowland & Lyons, n.d.). Aside from the abilities to pay for health care, people in the U.S. are living longer than ever before and many seniors live active and healthy lives, but as they age, their bodies and minds change which may be may just be part of normal aging, while others may be a warning sign of a medical problem (“Seniors’ Health: MedlinePlus,” n.d.). Because of this increasing demand for seniors seeking health care and limited ways of paying for service, a separate payment program is carved out for them.

  • Emotional Intelligence Paper

    Emotional Intelligence Paper

Empathy, motivation, self– and social awareness—what thoughts or images arise as you read these words? These terms relate to skills for understanding, expressing, and managing emotions in self and others, which are attributes of emotional intelligence.

Research frequently demonstrates the importance of emotional intelligence for leaders and managers. In health care, nursing leaders who demonstrate emotional intelligence can positively influence organizational outcomes by contributing to improved nurse retention, increased job satisfaction, and better health outcomes for patients (Codier, Muneno, Franey, & Matsuura, 2010).

To further your self–knowledge, you examine your own emotional intelligence and consider strategies for developing this important leadership characteristic.

    To Prepare

Review the leaning resources for Week 10. There are 2 tests that are available to you to assess your personal Emotional Intelligence. Take both the tests and consider your personal attributes of emotional intelligence..

Identify strategies for developing any areas of opportunity or areas for enhancing your emotional intelligence. What do you need to do to achieve or sustain a high level of performance in this area?

Also consider how to work with leaders who do not demonstrate strong emotional intelligence (EI) or whose EI strengths differ from yours. Include these strategies as well.

    To Complete

    Write
a 2– to 3–page paper that describes the results of your emotional intelligence assessment and include your strategies for developing your EI. Be sure to refer to your week 10 resources to develop these strategies and of course cite any references that you use. Also consider how to work with leaders who do not demonstrate strong emotional intelligence (EI) or whose EI strengths differ from yours. Include these strategies as well. Refer to your assignment rubic for grading criteria.

    Topic 1: Third-party Payment

Third party payment is distorting the market for health care due to how it has contributed to the increased level of spending in healthcare. The insurance companies that do the third party payments lack transparency. It is impossible for consumers to trace the real price of the medical services (Boyer, & Hammersla, 2012). Therefore, they have taken the advantage of rising prices and yet the quality of the services given is very poor. If there was transparency, then there would be healthy competition by the suppliers of medical services and this would lower the cost. This would also create a free market in the healthcare sector.

These countries insist on the third party intermediaries because they consider them as schemes for the poor. Due to the rising health care costs, they have argued that people would be in a position of acquiring health services through the low deductible premium policies and copayments (Danzon, et al., 2013). Further still, these third parties enable them to acquire great dividends due to the goodwill generated from them. The amount taxed from them enables these countries to advance to new medical technologies and drugs. However, the high-value technology doesn’t match up with the services given which are instead dwindling every single day.

Separate payment program for the elder citizens is carved out to enable them to acquire benefits that are convenient and ease the financial burden of healthcare (Abaluck, & Gruber, 2014). Also, they give minimum deductible rates for those that are earning. Those with no source of income are also considered since the government chips in. Elder citizens are at a high chance of getting health issues that are factored by age. The benefits they get cover acute diseases and prescription drugs. It also provides them with hospital insurance, skilled nursing care, and home care services especially for those with long-term ailments.

Birth Control Availability in the Community Essay

    Instructions:

As an adult, you theoretically have many options for controlling your fertility. If you were a teenager under 18, your options may be different and/or more difficult to implement.

Individuals can seek out services through private providers, hospitals, clinics, and/or purchase over-the-counter products. Their ability to do that may depend upon such factors as finances, insurance, transportation, and education about options. In addition, one’s belief system and relationship status may also impact options and choices.

One organization committed to providing services, regardless of a woman’s ability to pay, has been Planned Parenthood. The current election season has shown some politicians going after funding Planned Parenthood. Governor Christie proudly states how he defunded PP in New Jersey. Go online and visit the National Planned Parenthood website-

Click on: “Find a health center near you”

    http://www.plannedparenthood.org/

    Put in New Jersey.

Compare two centers in the state—one in a city, and one in another part of the state—suburban/rural. Identify the location of the sites you’re describing.

What kinds of services are available on site?

    What are their hours?

What kind of transportation is available and/or required to get there?

What kinds of payment are accepted? How much money is needed for a typical visit?

Briefly comment on the differences in services between the two facilities.

Please login to the following Web page:

and take a tour through the slide show, which shows actual footage of the Stanford Prison study.

    Please respond to three (3) of the following discussion questions;

What police procedures are used during arrests, and how do these procedures lead people to feel confused, fearful, and dehumanized?

If you were a guard, what type of guard would you have become? How sure are you?

What prevented “good guards” from objecting or countermanding the orders from tough or bad guards?

If you were a prisoner, would you have been able to endure the experience? What would you have done differently than those subjects did? If you were imprisoned in a “real” prison for five years or more, could you take it?

Why did our prisoners try to work within the arbitrary prison system to effect a change in it (e.g., setting up a Grievance Committee), rather than trying to dismantle or change the system through outside help?

What factors would lead prisoners to attribute guard brutality to the guards’ disposition or character, rather than to the situation?

What is “reality” in a prison setting? This study is one in which an illusion of imprisonment was created, but when do illusions become real?

Post your answers to the discussion board and comment on at least two posts of your classmates.
