The skills and knowledge required in this assignment will help prepare you for success on the final exam, as well as the final essay assignment. Choose one of the following prompts and write a 750 to 900-word essay examining these psychological theories.

    Prompts

**Choose one of the following prompts to examine in your essay:**

    1. Pavlov's classical conditioning theory examined associating two stimuli to produce the desired outcome. In your essay, define Pavlov's classical conditioning theory and provide two real-life examples of its application – for example, in the training of pets or establishing helpful routines for young children. What is beneficial about applying this theory? What could be dangerous about real-life applications of classical conditioning?

    2. Carl Stumpf, Oswald Kulpe, and Wilhelm Wundt all explored the idea that each individual perceives and processes the world differently. In your essay, define phenomenology and introspection, provide two real-life examples of their application (such as differing preferences in food or weather), and discuss how they have shaped the modern view of the self. What is beneficial about applying this theory? What are the risks involved in applying this theory to real life?

You may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use 2 sources and cite them using APA format. About this Assignment

In this course you learned the various concepts of the history and systems of psychology and how to apply the principles of this discipline. This course has provided a solid foundation for understanding modern psychology. You will now apply what you have learned in an essay assignment.

    Project Prompts

For this assignment, you must select one of the prompts below and write about a 2,000 word essay with a defensible thesis. Make sure to use textual evidence to support your thesis.

Investigate and analyze research findings on culture and discrimination in psychology. What are the hidden inequities and implicit biases that have skewed research findings? Consider intelligence testing as an example. Propose some action steps psychologists and researchers can take to remove bias and discrimination from their practice. Provide evidence for your argument and explain how and why your recommendations will help remove this bias and discrimination.

Thorndike proposed the Law of Effect to explain the future behaviors of individuals. Many institutions employ a system of punishment and rewards to curb, eradicate, or enhance behaviors. Select and research a system of punishment and rewards (i.e. school, penal system, home disciplinary system, etc.). Describe how the Law of Effect applies to and predicts future behaviors for individuals within this system. Additionally, provide an alternative perspective of how the Law of Effect may not predict future behavior in this system. Finally, make a recommendation as to how to apply the Law of Effect – is it a helpful framework to use, or does it harm individuals to predict behavior in the system you've chosen? Provide evidence for your argument and explain how and why your recommendations will help reduce bad behaviors.

Describe a system of punishment and reward that implemented to change behaviors of a population (i.e. tax breaks for charitable giving, suspension for fighting in school, or speeding tickets). Identify how the new rules, policies, or laws changed the behaviors of those it affected, and connect the experience to psychological theories and research that explain or contradict this policy. Using your research, propose an improved system you would use to enhance or extinguish the same behaviors.

As part of your research, you may refer to the course material for supporting evidence, but you must also use at least three credible, outside sources and cite them using APA format. Please include a mix of both primary and secondary sources, with at least one source from a scholarly peer-reviewed journal. If you use any Study.com lessons as sources, please also cite them in APA (including the lesson title and instructor's name).

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## Overview
In this project, you will apply inference methods for means to test your hypotheses about the housing sales market for a region of the United States. You will use appropriate sampling and statistical methods.
    ## Scenario
You have been hired by your regional real estate company to determine if your region’s housing prices and housing square footage are significantly different from those of the national market. The regional sales director has three questions that they want to see addressed in the report:
    1. Are housing prices in your regional market lower than the national market average?
    2. Is the square footage for homes in your region different than the average square footage for homes in the national market?
    3. For your region, what is the range of values for the 95% confidence interval of square footage for homes in your market?
You are given a real estate data set that has houses listed for every county in the United States. In addition, you have been given national statistics and graphs that show the national averages for housing prices and square footage. Your job is to analyze the data, complete the statistical analyses, and provide a report to the regional sales director. You will do so by completing the Project Two Template located in the What to Submit area below.
    ## Directions
    **Introduction**
    1. **Region:** Start by picking one region from the following list of regions:
West South Central, West North Central, East South Central, East North Central, Mid Atlantic
    2. **Purpose:** What is the purpose of your analysis?
    3. **Sample:**Define your sample. Take a random sample of 500 house sales for your region.
    1. Describe what is included in your sample (i.e., states, region, years or months).
    4. **Questions and type of test:** For your selected sample, define two hypothesis questions (see the Scenario above) and the appropriate type of test for each. Address the following _for each hypothesis_:
    1. Describe the population parameter for the variable you are analyzing.
    2. Describe your hypothesis in your own words.
    3. Identify the hypothesis test you will use (1-Tail or 2-Tail).
    5. **Level of confidence:** Discuss how you will use estimation and confidence intervals to help you solve the problem.
    **1-Tail Test**
    1. **Hypothesis:**Define your hypothesis.
    1. Define the population parameter.
    2. Write null (Ho) and alternative (Ha) hypotheses. **Note:** For means, define a hypothesis that _is less than_ the population parameter.
    3. Specify your significance level.
    2. **Data analysis:**Summarize your sample data using appropriate graphical displays and summary statistics and confirm assumptions have not been violated to complete this hypothesis test.
    1. Provide at least one histogram of your sample data.
    2. In a table, provide summary statistics including sample size, mean, median, and standard deviation. **Note:** For quartiles 1 and 3, use the quartile function in Excel:
    =QUARTILE([data range], [quartile number])
    3. Summarize your sample data, describing the center, spread, and shape in comparison to the national information (under Supporting Materials, see the National Summary Statistics and Graphs House Listing Price by Region PDF). **Note:** For shape, think about the distribution: skewed or symmetric.
    4. Check the conditions.
    1. Determine if the normal condition has been met.
    2. Determine if there are any other conditions that you should check and whether they have been met. **Note:** Think about the central limit theorem and sampling methods.
    3. **Hypothesis test calculations:**Complete hypothesis test calculations.
    1. Calculate the hypothesis statistics.
    1. Determine the appropriate test statistic ( _t_). **Note:** This calculation is (mean – target)/standard error. In this case, the mean is your regional mean, and the target is the national mean.
    2. Calculate the probability ( _p_ value). **Note:** This calculation is done with the T.DIST function in Excel:
=T.DIST([test statistic], [degree of freedom], True) The degree of freedom is calculated by subtracting 1 from your sample size.
    4. **Interpretation:**Interpret your hypothesis test results using the p value method to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.
    1. Relate the _p_ value and significance level.
    2. Make the correct decision (reject or fail to reject).
    3. Provide a conclusion in the context of your hypothesis.
    **2-Tail Test**
    1. **Hypotheses:**Define your hypothesis.
    1. Define the population parameter.
    2. Write null and alternative hypotheses. **Note:** For means, define a hypothesis that is _not equal to_ the population parameter.
    3. State your significance level.
    3. Summarize your sample data, describing the center, spread, and shape in comparison to the national information. **Note:** For shape, think about the distribution: skewed or symmetric.
    4. Check the assumptions.
    1. Determine if the normal condition has been met.
    2. Determine if there are any other conditions that should be checked on and whether they have been met. **Note:** Think about the central limit theorem and sampling methods.
    3. **Hypothesis test calculations:**Complete hypothesis test calculations.
    1. Calculate the hypothesis statistics.
    1. Determine the appropriate test statistic ( _t_). **Note:** This calculation is (mean – target)/standard error. In this case, the mean is your regional mean, and the target is the national mean.]
    2. Determine the probability (p value). **Note:** This calculation is done with the TDIST.2T function in Excel:
=T.DIST.2T([test statistic], [degree of freedom]) The degree of freedom is calculated by subtracting 1 from your sample size.
    4. **Interpretation:** Interpret your hypothesis test results using the _p_ value method to reject or not reject the null hypothesis.
    1. Compare the _p_ value and significance level.
    2. Make the correct decision (reject or fail to reject).
    3. Provide a conclusion in the context of your hypothesis.
    5. **Comparison of the test results:**Revisit Question 3 from the Scenario section: For your region, what is the range of values for the 95% confidence interval of square footage for homes?
    1. Calculate and report the 95% confidence interval. Show or describe your method of calculation.
    **Final Conclusions**
    1. **Summarize your findings:** In one paragraph, summarize your findings in clear and concise plain language.

    **Quasi-Experimental Research**

Quasi-experimental research is a type of research design that is frequently used in the real world. In other words, not within a controlled laboratory setting where there is an experimenter wearing a white coat and running tests on genetically identical white mice. With quasi-experimental research, the study is
_almost_, but not quite a true experiment. Quasi meaning ‘just about’ or ‘partly’ (Gravetter & Foranzo, 2018). Generally, scientists use quasi-experimental research when examining differences among groups that already exist in the real world. For example, if you wanted to explore the attitudes of individuals who are members of the Sierra Club (a club focused on the outdoors, nature, and hiking) to see if they differ from those who are non-members regarding their attitudes and beliefs about conservation and protecting the environment, you should use a quasi-experimental design.

With a quasi-experimental design, you cannot randomly assign subjects to the different experimental groups or treatment conditions. In this example, you are simply asking existing members of the Sierra Club to describe their attitudes, and then comparing them to non-members. You are unable to randomly assign participants to membership within the Sierra Club. This is why it is considered
_quasi_-experimental; the lack of the ability to randomly assign participants to being a member of the club or not is the issue.

As an additional example, if you wanted to explore men's leadership styles versus women within an organization, you would also need to use a quasi-experimental approach. With this type of design, you would simply interview the different leaders within the company who are either male or female. You would not be able to randomly reassign male and female employees to these different leadership roles within the company and then see how they lead. If this were a
_true_ experiment, however, the researcher would need to do so. This ability to randomly assign subjects to the different experimental groups or conditions is the main difference between a quasi-experimental design and a true experiment. Since the groups are pre-existing in a quasi-experimental design, and random assignment to these different groups or conditions is impossible, you can
_not_ say that the groups are equivalent before the study begins. In other words, there are probably non-random factors that are causing the individuals to be a part of the different groups, which can be the true cause of any effects observed (not the variable of interest to the researcher). Be sure to reach out with questions about this, and review the video as well for more understanding of this important point of distinction.

    ### **Instructions**

You have been asked to help budding researchers understand the difference between quasi-experiments and true experiments. Prepare a tip sheet that could be shared with others that may also serve as a helpful tool for you as you continue your studies. You may include graphics, tables, or other visuals to support your work.

To begin, provide an example of a quasi-experimental research design where you are studying differences among individuals within pre-existing groups or conditions that occur naturally within the real world. Briefly describe the study, and then include the following in your tip sheet:

    · Explain the issue of random assignment, and detail why it would be necessary to conduct a quasi-experimental study and not a true experiment in this hypothetical study.

    · Interpret how this group membership could be impactful in understanding the results.

    · Conclude with a brief exploration of what you would need to do to convert this into a true experiment, theoretically speaking.

Length: 2-3 page tip sheet, not including title and reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 2 scholarly resources.

The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards.

    **Last assignment’s feedback:**

In your assignment, you provide a well-detailed and accurate discussion of two descriptive/observational methods that could be used to answer your descriptive research question. You do a wonderful job of outlining limitations of each design and including thoughtful and appropriate ideas for addressing these limitations in your hypothetical study. You are correct that survey design is the best method to answer your research question.

A small point deduction occurred because you added a component to your descriptive question that does not align with developing strong research questions. Specifically, you added, "and how can we effectively study and compare these levels?" That part of the question cannot be answered by conducting a study; instead, you would answer it by studying research design and statistics to develop knowledge on the most effective methods.
