  • Funding preventive health care services

    Funding preventive health care services

Although preventative services such as routine well-care visits and immunizations have often shown to be beneficial in terms of preventing future, more expensive, health care encounters, not all insurance plans offer reimbursement for such things. In addition, health care policies have only recently begun to recognize the “worth” of funding prevention-related services.

Why do you believe that funding preventive health care services has taken so long to become a major component of health plans?

What do you think will need to happen to change the prevailing mindset of funding health care services reactively versus proactively from a third-party payer’s and a provider’s? Why?

  • Epidemiology

Epidemiology is the study of epidemics. More specifically, it is the study of the occurrence and distribution of health problems. Using any of the epidemiological techniques outlined in the chapters from this week’s reading, address the questions for one of the case studies outlined below.

Epidemiological Case #1: Gastroenteritis at a University in Texas Epidemiological Case #2: Norovirus in Vermont

There are two parts to this assignment:

Part I: Provide a brief statement of the investigative issue. Describe the epidemiological steps you would take by addressing the questions asked within the case study you select.

Part II: Address the questions noted at the end of your selected case study. Your paper should be at least four pages in length, but can exceed this depending on how much detail you provide on the epidemiological steps you take for your case. You should use at least one additional scholarly source in addition to the textbook. Format your paper and all citations according to APA style guidelines as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

    Function

Identify the role of a health care manager in the function stated.

Provide an explanation that illustrates the role of a health care manager as it applies to the function in the health care Industry.

    Organizing

The primary role of a healthcare manager in organizing is to ensure that the facilities are available for out-patient, in-patient and emergency units of the healthcare centre. The healthcare manager must be able to organize the administration of the functions and services forth customers in an efficiently way which is not time consuming activities.

The manager must be able to organize the budget for each unit and ensure its proper management to meet the needs of the units and the customers. The healthcare manager must be able to arrange not only for the required supplies but also create relationships with alternative suppliers for back up supplies. The information technology functions have to be well developed and the latest technology in healthcare should be installed  to make the treatment and training processes for all medical professionals of high quality and provide a competitive edge though proper management of all the resources.

    Planning

The role of the health care manager in planning entail creating the budget for the health care organization, developing strategic plans to met competition and to meet the business goals of the organization. Planning for a healthcare manager means taking the business decisions to make the health care organization profitable, efficient and be in a position to deliver high quality healthcare services and treatment in view of the cost of treatment which patients have to pay.

The plans that are developed by the healthcare manager provide the vision and the direction for the entire human resources of the healthcare organization. The purpose of planning all the activities is to make sure that the goals and the activities to achieve the business goals are suited to the need of the organization, the medical professionals and the community needs. His role in planning is to manage the healthcare business of the organization.

    Controlling

The role of the health care manager in controlling is to establish an acceptable level of performance for all the medical professionals which need to be followed by all those working in the healthcare organization. The Manager places the controls on the standards of performance and puts into place the key performance – indicators by which each employee receives a feedback. The control includes taking corrective and preventive actions.

The healthcare manager sets the standards of performance to measure the quality of performance, the performance measurements are taken and compared with the set standards, take corrective action in all areas of management to, ensure that the supplier power is low, the investors understand the business logic of the control functions which provides them with returns and all the patient safety measures and staff safety measures are in place. The Manager also has to ensure regulatory compliance and reporting to avoid penalties.

    Leading

The role of a healthcare manager in leading is to inspire the employees in the healthcare organization, the motivate them to performance to the best of their ability, to use ethical means of treatment and ethical behavior within the organizational culture and to provide the leadership by example of integrity, honesty and ethical standards for personal performance.

While leading the team the Manager needs to be able to connect to all the employees and medical professionals to give them the confidence of being able to work creatively to cure a patient not just prevent a disease. The right type of leadership needs to be provided as all healthcare managers may not be leaders. The inspiration and the urge to follow should come from within each individual in the healthcare organization. The manager’s role in leading is to sow them the goal and the objectives and provide the strategy for achievements.

  • Leadership theories

    Leadership theories

    Context

How important is it that we develop bench strength to increase the number of effective global leaders in today’s world? An article in the OD Practitioner noted that, “Out of 900 multinational organizations surveyed, 52% were planning to expand their operations within the next few years, but only 16% reported having enough globally ready leaders to fill their crucial roles” (Salicru, Wassenaar, Suerz, & Spittle, 2016, p. 12). This is clearly a shortage, and if you are the CEO of a global firm, the statistics just might keep you up at night worrying about filling that void.

The playing field for leaders has changed, and it is imperative that leaders develop solid global competencies that meet the ever-expanding worldwide needs. Bishop (2013) advocates that: “To be effective on a global stage, leaders must transcend international and cultural boundaries. They must become global leaders” (p. 78). The global leader must be the “best of the best,” and operate in many different arenas. In order to do this, they need to develop to meet those challenges. To be effective as a leader, it is essential to understand your personal leadership strengths, as well as the areas where improvement is needed.

Leadership theories and models give us a way to examine effective global leadership. As leaders, it is important to select appropriate leadership models which align the individual, the organization, the economic reality, and society not only as they are today, but as they can be in the future. There is no one “right” theory of leadership; but without theory, leaders would have nothing against which to weigh their decisions and actions when dealing with difficult situations in the global business environment. “Theory-building is important because it provides a framework for analysis, facilitates the efficient development of the field, and is needed for the applicability to practical real world problems” (Wacker, 1998, p. 361).

Some theories provide better fits among practitioners, organizations, societies, and the evolving global economy than others. Some of the practitioner competencies embedded in these theories align with Gardner’s (2008) five minds. For example: respect for people (respectful mind), a global mindset (synthesizing mind), the capacity to see forward into the future (creating mind), a willingness and ability to define common ground across boundaries (synthesizing mind), and a dedication to transformative change to bring in a new world (creating mind). These theories address the complexity, diversity, and competitive environment today’s leaders face as they move into markets, innovate, and globalize—competing everywhere with everyone.

Analyzing emerging leadership theories is a process that requires an examination focused on the flat, nonlinear, and dialogical nature of work that deals in part with capacity building, innovation, and integration of both local and global views to express a better self and a better future. In other words, the emerging theories differ from some of the traditional theories because they are not linear in nature. The complexity of the global conditions and emerging trends does not lend itself to linear or hierarchical approaches. Instead, emerging theories often take the learner into new world views and new views of relating work, person, place, culture, and future together. They include such theories as transformational leadership, servant leadership, shared leadership, integrated leadership, transcendent leadership, spiritual leadership, and more.

    Assessment Instructions

Use the Golf Ball Distance Test file, linked in the Resources under the Required Resources heading, to complete the calculations for the scenario for this assessment.

    Practical Application Scenario

Your love of golf has brought you back to the range as the new product manager for UniDun’s “Straight Flight” (SF) line of golf balls. The company’s research and development group has been experimenting with dimple patterns that promote straight flight and have achieved some degree of success. You, however, are worried about the effect that the new pattern might have on driving distance.

The Golf Ball Distance Test file contains test results that compare the driving distances for the two different kinds of balls: 40 balls of the new SF type, and 40 of the old UniDun type. Your job is to determine if the old UniDun balls can be driven further than the new SF balls. To resolve this question, you need to appropriately address the following:

Identify the null and alternative hypotheses you should form for this test. State each both as a written explanation and as a math equation.

Identify the appropriate statistical test to accept or reject the null hypothesis.

    Calculate the p-value.

Summarize your findings and recommendations about the new golf ball product to the vice president of marketing. Your report should not be a statistical analysis of the testing but a summary of the testing results. Assume that your audience is unfamiliar with statistical analysis.

    Additional Requirements

Compile your work and report in a 1–2 page Microsoft Word file:

Paste in the tables you used to make your calculations.

Clearly title your tables, including each row and column.

Highlight the results of your data calculations within each table.
