  • Meaningful Use Paper

Why are many health care organizations hesitant to adopt electronic health records (EHR) when they have the potential to improve quality, increase access, and reduce costs? Some organizations are concerned with the ethical and legal issues that may arise in daily operations. In 2010, legislators noticed health care’s reluctant transition into full EHR integration, and began to provide financial incentives to those organizations that not only adopt EHRs, but also use them meaningfully to improve quality of patient care. As an advanced practice nurse, it is important to be aware of the challenges, policies, and incentives associated with integrating EHR systems. It is also critical that you understand the concept of “meaningful use” and how it plays out in today’s health care organizations.

    To prepare:

In this Application Meaningful Use Paper Assignment, you analyze meaningful use criteria to determine the authentic legal, financial, and ethical issues that may surround it.

Reflect on the information presented      in the Learning Resources, focusing on meaningful use legislation and the      “Ethics in Nursing Informatics” section of your course text.

Investigate the legal, financial, and      ethical issues surrounding meaningful use.

Ask yourself: What are the goals of      meaningful use?

Write a 4- to 5-page Meaningful Use Paper essay in APA format with at least 5 references from my list of required readings provided below, in which you include the level one as per APA format guidelines:

    1) A cover page.

    2) An introduction ending with a purpose statement (e.g. “The purpose of this paper is…)

    3) Summarize the legal, financial, and ethical issues that may arise as a result of meaningful use legislation.

    4) Explain how these issues might present barriers to successful implementation within an organization.

    5) Discuss ways that health care organizations can make the most of their electronic health record (EHR) investments in light of meaningful use.

    6) Explain how EHR-related meaningful use legislation is being implemented in your organization.

    7) A conclusion

    8) A references pages in APA format.

    Qualitative Annotated Bibliography

For this assignment you will continue to review current research from South’s Online Library and provide a critical evaluation on that research through an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography is a brief summary and analysis of the journal article reviewed. For more information on annotated bibliographies please visit Purdue’s OWL: Purdue Online Writing Lab

A total of two annotated bibliographies are to be submitted (not to exceed one page each). The articles must come from nursing scholarly literature and may not be older than 5 years since publication. • Clinical Nurse Leader Comment

The clinical nurse leader is a master level educated nurse that works to improve     quality care, by collecting and evaluating treatment results, and     work to improve out comes by advocating for evidence-based changes     (Register Nursing, n.d.). The clinical nurse leader requires a high     level of clinical competency and knowledge, and during the master     level classes requires advanced courses in pathophysiology, clinical     assessment, and pharmacology with a focus on general medicine,     opposed to just one primary discipline (Register Nurse, n.d.). The     clinical nurse leader works closely with patients and will provide     direct clinical leadership to ensure safe care delivery (Reid, &     Dennison, 2011).

The role of a     clinical nurse leader is to find ways to improve quality patient     care, by examining outcomes, risk, along with changing care plans if     needed, and advocating for fellow nurses (Register Nursing, n.d.).     The clinical nurse leader influences direct patient care by serves     that promote shorter hospital stays, lower readmission rates, lower     infection rates, fewer falls, less injuries, and even lower nurse     turn-over (Register Nurse, n.d.). The clinical nurse leader also     achieves lower healthcare cost to the institution with these     changes, and ensures cost effective care while addressing barriers     to efficiency (Register Nursing, n.d.).

The clinical     nurse leader can influence patient care both in the hospital and the     community, by a subculture of care with leadership, team-work,     evidence-based care, communication, justice, and     patient-centeredness (Reid & Dennison, 2011). One example of a     clinical nurse leader might be ensuring clients, families and     communities are informed about their health while advocating for     nursing staff. The clinical nurse leader routinely monitor and     intervene based on the units vital signs, or information about the     units aggregate safety and quality functioning, are also examples of     what role a clinical nurse leader might perform daily (Reid &     Dennison, 2011).

In acute care or community healthcare the CNL   works as a bond between direct care teams, the patient, and other   healthcare professionals.  The CNL is necessary to increase   nursing knowledge base and education, provide cost effective quality   care and move the nursing profession to a place of equality with other   providers.
