    Leadership in Quality Improvement

Data to support patient care comes from a variety of sources that contain differing data types. Key activities to use clinical data include identifying the sources of data, understanding the data types and associated methods to work with the data, and identifying the necessary resources to complete your IT project.

The scope of your IT project will determine the level of data access required and the associated data storage needs. Data used in multisite projects will require IRB oversight and often require the execution of a DUA if transferring data outside of the institution or receiving data from another institution.

Identifying and assembling an adequate project team is based on the needs of the project. At a minimum, you will need to include frontline staff that will use the product, a data analyst capable of completing the ETL process on the data, and potentially statisticians to conduct appropriate model building and outcomes analyses.

There are multiple approaches to analyzing data. AI is the latest advance in machine learning approaches that include supervised, in which data is labeled and the algorithm is guided with statistical considerations, and unsupervised, in which unlabeled data is used to infer meaning. While robust, machine learning approaches require interdisciplinary teams and large resource dedication to complete.

All projects require review and potential revision over time. Follow-up and review of implemented programs should be included in the initial planning stages and resource allocation decisions at project inception.

**Let us consider the following for the quality improvement project:**

You are a new manager on your Heart Failure/Cardiac step-down unit and have high hopes for your floor.

**Identify several IT projects that you as the nurse manager of a nursing unit could develop to support the operations of the nursing floor to promote compliance with daily weights for your HF patients.**

As you do your RCA analysis you realize that compliance to many of the issues causing experiences on your floor is due to the poor health data literacy within your nursing staff.
**Why is it important for nurse leaders to develop health data literacy?**

First you will complete research on family genograms. This is a good place to start
[https://genopro.com/genogram/](https://genopro.com/genogram/) [https://genopro.com/articles/](https://genopro.com/articles/) will also help you. (Hint – there are several articles on that website that will help you with this section and the next one.)

Another resource that you can use for creating a genogram is
[How to Make a Genogram Online | EdrawMax Online.](https://nam10.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.edrawmax.com%2Fgenogram%2Fhow-to-make-a-genogram%2F&data=05%7C01%7CKMangeri%40APUS.EDU%7C5582c645ffba4c856bd808daf17f6c0e%7C0bdfeecd6ad9451b8df007e43d531d67%7C0%7C0%7C638087826839853089%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=b1LEzCcC3cQ9Y0PwwcjEsA4iFRMGaj%2FCg0qO%2Fp2JFl0%3D&reserved=0)

Write a summary (in  a Word doc) on your research. Any information you use from any source  needs to be cited! Here are a few examples of topics you need to  discuss: .

    · The history of genograms

    · How genograms are used

    · How genograms are completed

    · What are the benefits and/or challenges of developing a genogram

    · Any other information you'd like to share from your research

For the  second part of this assignment you will "map out" your immediate family.  You may need to contact extended family members for help. If that's not  possible, no problem, do the best you can with the information you  have. You'll start with you and your significant other as well as your  children. Then, if possible, please go back two generations. Remember, a  genogram is
**_more_** than a family tree. You need  to identify relationships and their status (strong, weak, abusive,  etc.), behavioral patterns (teen pregnancy, divorce, substance abuse,  etc.), health issues and/or any other issues that you know of or become  aware of during your research. Don't forget to include a key that  explains what the lines, shapes, colors, etc. mean.

Please  complete your genogram using genopro.com, as a Word doc using whatever  shapes, symbols, colors, etc. you want, or you can draw your genogram by  hand, scan it, and upload it as an attachment. PLEASE keep in mind that  this is not an art class – I'm not looking for a masterpiece. The  purpose of this assignment is for you to see what
patterns emerge within your family. After you've completed your genogram please write a summary (
add to the Word doc you've started), that includes the answers to the following questions (as well as anything else you'd like to share): .

    1. What  did you learn about your family history? (Please share as much as you  are comfortable with. This assignment is very personal and your  instructor is the only person who will read it.)

    2. What was the experience of collecting information like for you?

    3. Are  there any patterns that emerged that surprised you? (For example  communication, addiction, teen pregnancy, mental healthy issues, etc.)  Why or why not?

    4. How could a genogram help a couple strengthen (in general) their relationship?

    5. How could parents (in general) use a genogram to educate their children?

    6. Conclude your summary  by summarizing what you learned from this assignment and how you can apply it to your family.

patterns emerge within your family.

    **Assignment 2 – 2 page -MLA**

    this module's reading in
_Essentials of Children's Literature_, your three chosen books, and the one article you researched.

What comes to mind when you think of the terms Diversity and Inclusion? Are they the same? Are they different? How? This will start you on a journey to discover more about the importance of diversity and inclusion in children's literature.

    this has two parts:

    1. Summarize the article on diversity in children's literature or education that you researched. Provide a few sentences of engagement and commentary.

Remember that to find the article, you should use internet sites, such as
[Children's Literature Assembly.](https://www.childrensliteratureassembly.org/) If you opt for other sites, make sure your article is from a .org, .gov, or .edu site.

    2. Summarize and analyze each of three children's books on diversity and inclusion that you read. Introduce each book, the author, and intended age group. Provide a brief plot summary and describe the illustrations. What does each book suggest about the importance of diversity and inclusion in children's books, and why? Align your ideas about your books with information contained within the article you chose. Make sure to cite your articles and books at the end of your posting in MLA format.

Remember that two of the books should feature characters from other ethnicities or cultures, and the third book should feature characters who are disabled (physical, developmental, learning, emotional, etc.). An excellent resource to start looking for books and blogs over Diversity and Inclusion in children's literature is

Your book will need to feature some aspect of diversity and/or inclusion, either as a theme or with the characters you choose. Your book can be fiction (realistic, science fiction, fantasy, or historical fiction) or nonfiction (biography, autobiography, or memoir).

To help you get an idea for the structure, formatting, content, and use of text and space, open any children's book and use it as a model.

    · focus on a lesson for the book to teach

    · focus on some aspect of diversity or inclusion

    · create a setting (time and place) and use vivid, engaging descriptions. There are two types of settings. Temporal setting refers to time (Autumn, evening, Christmas, dusk, dawn, 3am). Spatial setting refers to place (the kitchen, Austria, a ranch in West Texas, a National Park, an ostrich farm).

    · use illustrations or photography appropriate to the age, audience, theme, and tone of your story. Illustrations and/or photographs may be your own, from someone you know (used with permission), or Creative Commons images from open source cites (e.g., Pixabay)

    · use visual balance between negative and positive space

    · avoid too much text bunched together on one page

    · follow one of the children's books we have read this semester as a model, in terms of dialogue, composition and placement of images, size of font, title and author pages, etc.

    Week 7. Discussion. Systems Theory

In 1968, biologist Ludwig von Bertalanffy developed General Systems Theory (GST). Simply put, GST suggests that complex issues are best understood by examining how interdependences and interrelationships among their component parts account for the whole. Prior to the development of systems theory, professionals from many different disciplines examined one part of a problem in isolation, which is referred to as a reductionist approach. For example, medical doctors using a reductionist approach would focus solely on the biological causes of a disease (e.g., abnormal cells) without also considering sociological causes (e.g., exposure to pollutants) and psychological causes (e.g., smoking to reduce stress).

Taking a systems approach can also be useful for organizational development and change. Last week you examined change management theories, which illustrate that there are many different parts of change that must be considered to manage it effectively. In this Discussion, you will explore systems theory and its importance for organizational development and change.

    **To prepare for this Discussion:**

    · Read the article, “Systems Theories (Psychology).” Pay particular attention to the definition of systems theory and how it is applied.

    · Read pages 368–388 in the e-book,
_General Systems Theory_. Think about the life cycle of organizations and identify specific examples of organizational development and change.

    · Select an organization for which you currently work or have previously worked, or a well-known organization (e.g., Amazon, Walmart, Facebook). Consider the benefits of using systems theory for organizational development and change (e.g., creation of new product line, implementation of new software, mergers/acquisitions, downsizing).

**INSTRUCTIONS:** Briefly explain systems theory. Then assess its importance for organizational change and development. In your assessment, use specific examples from the organization you selected and current research on systems theory to illustrate your points.

    **## Week7ASSIGNMENT.LeadershipEffectsOnOrganizations.docx**

Week 7. Assignment. Leadership Effects on Organizations

Leaders influence micro-, meso-, and macro-level issues in an organization. For example, good leaders can motivate employees, improve the functioning of work teams, and help the organization evolve to remain competitive in the global marketplace.

In this Assignment, you will culminate your learning over the past three weeks by examining how leaders affect micro-, meso-, and macro-level phenomena. In doing so, you will revisit topics from previous weeks (i.e., leadership, motivation, and group dynamics) and explore new topics (i.e., organizational structure and culture).

    **To Prepare for this Assignment:**

    · Select an organization in which you currently work or have previously worked. You may also select a well-known organization (e.g., Amazon, Walmart, Facebook). Choose a leader in the organization for which you worked or a leader you are familiar with in the well-known organization.

    · Read the article, “Leadership Style and Organizational Impact.” Focus on the strengths and limitations of different leadership styles. Think about which style your chosen leader embodies, and why.

    · Reflect on your prior learning about employee motivation (Week 5) and group dynamics (Week 6). Consider how your chosen leader positively and/or negatively influences both.

    · Review pages 368–388 in the e-book,
_General Systems Theory_. Focus on different types of organizational structures (referred to as organizational designs in the book). Then consider the role of your chosen leader in determining and supporting organizational structure.

    · Read Chapter 9 in
_The SAGE Handbook_ and the journal articles in the Learning Resources. Pay particular attention to definitions, components, and types of organizational culture. In addition, consider how your chosen leader’s actions influence the organization’s culture.

Week 7.

    **## WeeK7Discussion.SystemsTheory.docx**

    Week 7.
