    **Topic: Foreign Direct Investment**
**Professor's Guidance for this week's LE:**
Investing  in the international market is a huge risk for any organization (Peng,  2009). It is key that the company gather historical data on the host  country’s currency value fluctuation and import/export timelines. This  is crucial. The deal you discuss today may not be executed in time to  reap the full potential of the opportunity. You could be (Peng, 2009)  negotiating a deal that may cost 15 percent more in a few months when  the transaction is finalized. Worse yet, you may offer a promotion that  costs you significantly more a week into the offering (Peng, 2009). Lock  in currency rates and delivery dates in advance whenever possible. The  less speculation, the better.
Peng, M. (2009). Global business. Boston: Cengage Learning.
    **Prompt**
For  a smaller country that seeks to improve its overall economy and  economic standard of living for its people, would you recommend that it  accept more foreign investment in the country such as foreign  organizations setting up operations in the country, or would you  recommend that the smaller country simply accept aid from such entities  as the United Nations and the World Bank and avoid foreign investment?  The country cannot do both, so choose one or the other and explain why  you believe it is the best way to stimulate more growth and improve the  standard of living for the smaller country

ACC 6140 –– Patio Pillows Company
    Background:
Patio Pillows Company, located in Nevada, makes decorative pillows for outdoor furniture. Outdoor
furniture is very popular in Nevada and the company sells their pillows at home decorating stores and
other stores such as Lowe’s. The company sells the pillows to their retailers for $14 per pillow. Each
    pillow requires the following:
1.25 yards of fabric at a cost to Patio Pillows of $6 per yard.
Each month, the company has a goal to maintain ending stock of fabric equal to 10% of the next month’s
production requirements. The company also has a goal to have finished pillow ending stock equal to
20% of the anticipated next month’s sales.
    Data:
Sales in units are projected to be as noted for the first three months of the year: (the amounts go up as
    demand towards Spring/Summer increases):
    Month Projected pillow

are anticipated to be made. For this section, assume that 10% of the company’s pillows are cash
sales, while the remaining 90% will represent credit card sales.
    2. Prepare a production budget for the pillows. Assume that Patio Pillows projects pillow sales in
    April of 120,000 units.
    3. Prepare the direct materials purchases budget. Note that Patio Pillows assumes that the
company will require at least 150,000 yards of fabric to meet April’s production.
Once you have completed these budgets, respond to the following:
When setting up the budgeting process, we need to have a clear understanding of certain decisions to
be made by Patio Pillows. For each question, provide a minimum of 1 page response. Discuss the
    following:
    A. What are budgets used for and what should be the driving force behind Patio Pillows in the

Based on the positions, what responsibilities do each of these individuals have?
    C. What are the advantages and disadvantages to creating a budget at the beginning of each fiscal

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Prior to beginning work on this assignment:
    – Read Chapters 4 and 5 in your textbook.
    – Review the interactive, The Probability Game, to synthesize your understanding of different data visualization tools.
In this assignment, you will analyze the Cost-of-Living Index and Groceries Index for seven United States cities. You will then create a scatterplot to represent the relationships between the variables. In the end, you will describe the implications of your analysis in your assignment. You may choose any seven United States cities you wish.
Go to the [Northern America: Current Cost of Living Index by CityLinks to an external site.](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/region_rankings_current.jsp?region=021) webpage and follow the directions below to get started:
    – Identify seven cities and note the “Cost of Living Index” and “Groceries Index” values.
    – In your Excel spreadsheet or tool of your choice, develop a table with three columns with the following titles:
    – City
    – Groceries Index (independent variable)
    – Cost of Living Index (dependent variable)
    – Enter details for all seven cities under these column headers. You will then have a table with seven rows representing each city in one row.
    – Now, insert or draw a scatterplot of the above data set.
    – Display the regression line (also called the trend line, linear model, or line of best fit). To do so in Excel, select anywhere in the scatterplot. Select the plus sign, and at the bottom of Chart Elements, select “Trend line.”
    – Display the equation for the trend line and R2 value on the graph. To do so in Excel, right-select the trend line. Review the options on the right of the chart under “Format Trendline…” and scroll to the bottom to select the boxes for “Display Equation on chart” and “Display R-squared value on chart” options.
    In your assignment,

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## Research Discussion #5
    ## TOPIC: **Amazon.com: To Infinity and Beyond**
    The opening Chapter 8 Case
discusses  the story of the founding of Amazon.com which is now more than 25 years  old. Building from its online book selling to an overall marketplace  welcoming third party sellers moved the firm into a global environment.  Building on its slogan of “the everything store,” Amazon continues to  cover a wide variety of consumer needs including country specific sites  to enhance their global footprint. The firm has also moved vertically  with cloud-based computing services and developing its own content for  Prime video streaming. Also recently Amazon has bought Whole Foods and  started AmazonCampus to further broaden its product and market reach.
There are four sets of questions that you need to discuss in a substantial and critical manner:
    1. Describe Amazon's diversification strategy using Exhibit 8.8. What type of diversification strategy is Amazon pursuing? Explain.
    2. What  is Amazon’s core business? Is AWS related to Amazon’s core business?  Why or why not? Some investors are pressuring Jeff Bezos to spin out AWS  as a standalone company. Do you agree with this corporate strategy  recommendation? Why or why not? Hint: Do you believe AWS would be more  valuable within Amazon or as a standalone company?
    3. Amazon.com  is now 25 years old and makes $140 billion in annual revenues. As an  investor, would it concern you that Amazon.com has yet to deliver any  consistent profits? Why or why not? How much longer do you think  investors will be patient with Jeff Bezos as he continues to pursue  billion-dollar diversification initiatives?
    4. Amazon.com  continues to spend billions on seemingly unrelated diversification  efforts. Do you believe these efforts contribute to Amazon gaining and  sustaining a competitive advantage? Why or why not?
PROFESSOR'S GUIDANCE FOR THIS WEEK'S RD:
You  have to consider the content of Chapter 8, paying attention to many  news reports articles and videos about the purchase of Whole Foods. Look  into concepts and products such as kindles, aws, expansion into college  campuses, the fleet of delivery vans, etc. Consider "pure play" and  margins, growth rates, and growth prospects. Look into the fact  that Amazon started turning profits ONLY in mid-2015! Look into Amazon's  mission and Corporate Strategy.
For  instance, diversification can also allow a company to minimize the risk  of an industry downturn, it can boost brand image, and it can also be  used as a defense mechanism to protect a company from strong  competition.
