When documenting felony investigations involving property, accuracy and detail are absolutely critical. Unlike misdemeanors, felonies usually involve higher value property, larger scale damages, or repeated criminal intent. Because of this, the standard of evidence and documentation is generally higher, and mistakes or vague details can impact the entire case outcome, including prosecution or plea deals.

In a felony property case, like burglary or grand theft, officers are typically required to record extensive details about the stolen or damaged property. This could include brand, make/model, serial numbers, estimated value, photographs of the scene and property, witness statements, security footage if available, and a clear timeline of events. If the property was recovered, the chain of custody becomes important too. All of this must be well documented and accounted for, or the defense might argue the evidence was mishandled or unreliable.

Now, if you compare this to a misdemeanor property crime like petty theft or vandalism, the general documentation is still important, but it might not need the same level of depth. You’d still want a good description of the item or damage, possible suspects, time and location, and any witness info, but it's often a shorter report with less pressure on evidentiary standards.

That’s why solid note taking and good writing matter so much. You might be the officer writing the initial report, but months later in court, that report might be what everyone is looking at to piece together what happened. If your notes are sloppy or your writing is vague, that can hurt the case—especially in a felony. Clear, detailed writing makes the facts easy to understand for detectives, attorneys, and even jurors later on. Even small mistakes or unclear wording might get a piece of evidence thrown out or leave room for doubt.

All in all, felony property investigations demand thoroughness in documentation, and the quality of note-taking and writing can honestly make or break how strong the case is.

A felony crime is considered a serious crime, particularly when involving property offenses, which means that there is a tremendous financial loss to the victim. Some examples of felonies involving property are vandalism, damage to private property, and auto theft.

When an officer responds to a felony property crime, several requirements must be met to document the crime scene properly. Upon arrival at the scene, once it is deemed safe, the responding officer is expected to section off the crime scene and physically document what is observed upon arrival. The officer must identify the following details: “Note points of entry, exit and flight, note force used to enter a property or vehicle, note the location of broken glass, check glass for blood (DNA) or fingerprints and check for points of entry for tool marks and look for tools used” (Greenberg, 2020). The responding officer should take witness statements, annotate notes on the accumulation of witness testimonies, and document evidence observed to piece the crime scene together. Once the initial intake of evidence is completed at the crime scene, the responding officer must make a detailed list of what property was stolen, damaged, or destroyed. This list should include the name of ownership and the cost of the property.

Misdemeanors and felonies should have the same information taken and documented. While misdemeanors are considered lower on the legal totem pole, they are still considered crimes. “Although misdemeanor crimes involving people and property may seem like minor types of case reports, these types of crimes are commonplace and need to be properly documented to facilitate potential future prosecution and closure of the incident” (Morris & Merson,2016, p.126). Like felony cases, misdemeanor cases should be appropriately documented, observed, with witness, victim, and suspect testimonies, evidence preservation, and proper crime scene etiquette. While misdemeanors should be treated equally in terms of baseline requirements as felonies, a felony often has more resources available due to the severity of the crime, thereby allowing for a greater in-depth investigation that misdemeanor crimes may not receive.

Note-taking is highly vital in every law enforcement scenario, but it is even more critical in regard to felonies because of the severity of these crimes. Notes are utilized for clarity, credibility, and reference when referring to a crime scene. Without legible notes, the officer from the scene may not have the ability to recall small but significant details that can change the trajectory of a case.

This overall theme of the discussion can be related to scripture: “May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance” (2 Thessalonians 3:5). This scripture highlights themes of love and perseverance, which are essential when dealing with crimes among God’s children. Law enforcement officers must have a passion for justice, for people, for the job, and even for the mundane aspects. As well as perseverance with every task, every dead end, and every battle.

Let’s say you were talking with a friend and they said that males are more risk-taking than females. This makes some sense given what we know about the male species. However, you are a scientist and you say to your friend, “let’s actually see if we can answer this question scientifically rather than based on the stupid things we see guys do compared to the typical calculating approach that females usually take.” In order to do this, you walk through NHST process:

Using the class_survey dataset complete the following:

Part 1: Are there differences in levels of sensation-seeking between males and females?

    1. Come up with a null and alternative hypothesis regarding the association between sex/gender and sensation seeking (Brief Sensation Seeking Scale; BSSS_Total).

    2. First you are to compute descriptive statistics (i.e., mean, min – max, standard error of mean, and standard deviation) of sensation-seeking for males and females separately. To do this you will have to use the “select cases” feature in spss.

    · select “data”

    · from the drop-down menu select “select cases”

    · in the dialogue box under “select” click the radio button next to “if condition is satisfied” then click “if”.

    · find the gender variable in the left-hand column and move it over to the open window on the right using the arrow button.

    · to select on males put an “=” sign next to gender

    · and set it equal to “0”.

    · click continue and then OK.

    · to check and make sure it worked you can run a frequency on gender and only males should be reported. You will also see that in data view the female cases will have a slash through them.’

    · compute the mean of BSSS_Total.

    · follow the same steps for females (i.e., select cases = 1 for gender).

Note that when you do this you will see a new variable created "filter_$". This is so you can easily apply the filter later on but you do not need to keep this variable so do not save the dataset when closing the application (or just delete the variable).

    **Video Tutorial**

    3. Based on your output, are there mean differences between males and females on sensation seeking? Describe this in a couple of sentences. You should discuss the direction and how much of a mean difference there is. Keep in mind that by just observing the means, we cannot say any difference is significant. We can only say that the means are different in our sample – we cannot draw any inferences about he population.

    4. The next thing you are going to do is compute 95% confidence intervals for males and females by hand to see if they come from the same population regarding sensation seeking (see section 2.8: "I is for confidence interval" in your text book). You will need to use the appropriate information from the output produced in #2 (mean and SE of the mean). You may also need to use the standard normal table. You also need to show your work for computing the 95% C.I. When doing this you can round out to the third decimal place. Please type this out in the Word document.

    5. Now you are to check that you did this properly by computing 95% confidence intervals in spss (see video in module). Note. Make sure that you go back to “select cases” and click the radio button for “all cases”. The answers you obtained when computing by hand may not be exactly as what spss gives you due to rounding but they should be pretty close. The output from this is to be copied and pasted into a word document with the rest of your work.

**Here is a video tutorial for creating CIs in spss for one and two groups:**

    6. Discuss what you observed regarding sensation seeking and sex in paragraph form and whether or not you should “reject” or “fail to reject” the null hypothesis based on your findings. In other words, determine and discuss if 95% C.I.s overlap (or not) and what that means regarding your hypothesis.

**Part 2: Are there differences in sensation-seeking between those who have engaged in theft and those who have not engaged in theft?**

    1. Repeat steps 1 – 6 of Part 1 except compare those who have reported intentionally stealing something to those who have not on sensation seeking. You will use the "Theft" variable and the "BSSS_Total" variable.

Your completed assignment (turned in to me) should include: your two sets of hypotheses, write-up for #3 (for Parts 1 and 2), results for 95% C.I.s (show work, for Parts 1 and 2), copied and pasted output for the 95% C.I. from spss, write-up regarding whether or not you found support for the hypotheses (#6; for Parts 1 and 2). All should be in a word document with your first and last name in the file name.

Exam 1 Instructions: Online PowerPoint Presentation

Assignment Overview: The exam consists of six questions related to the course material covered so far. You are required to create and submit a video recording of yourself delivering a PowerPoint presentation that addresses four of the six questions in detail. In other words, you must pick four out of the six questions for your presentation.

    **Instructions:**

    1. Prepare Your Exam Presentation:

Develop a PowerPoint presentation that covers the assigned questions.

Make sure you are citing the relevant readings from this course, but you may also incorporate readings from previous courses in the master’s program.

Ensure your slides are clear, concise, and visually engaging.

Practice your presentation to ensure smooth delivery.

**Questions: (Pick 4 out of the 6 for your exam presentation).**

    1. Describe in detail the central thesis behind Broken Windows policing. How does Broken Windows theory fit into Packer’s two models of criminal process? Is Broken Windows policing more closely linked to Crime Control or Due Process? What implications does this have, and what might Packer suggest are some of the consequences of this approach?

    2. Police officers have a substantial amount of discretion. Why is understanding police decision-making such an important line of scientific inquiry? To what extent do various factors (individual, organizational, situational, community-level) influence police decisions? Provide a comprehensive analysis citing relevant research.

    3. Tyler discusses the importance of legitimacy for developing support and cooperation with police. In the changing face of policing, specifically as law enforcement has become more militarized, how might willful cooperation and support of the police change? What effects might the militarization of the police have on the public’s view of police as legitimate?

    4. As the newly appointed chief of police for a major urban police department facing rising crime rates, your primary objective is to reduce crime. Concurrently, community leaders have expressed a desire for stronger police-community relationships. Drawing upon the empirical evidence presented in this course (or others from this master's program), describe in detail how you would structure your police organization and what policing strategies you would implement to achieve these dual objectives. Provide a comprehensive rationale for your approach based on relevant research.

    5. What are the central tenets of David Klinger’s ecological theory of police response? How does the research presented in ‘Cop in the Hood’ by Peter Moskos support or refute Klinger's theory? Provide specific examples from the book

    6. How does Meyer and Rowan’s “Institutional Theory” explain the adoption and implementation of innovations in police organizations. What role do institutional pressures play in shaping decisions about the formal structure and activities of police agencies? According to this theory, how do police organizations "survive"?

The criminal justice system is developed through **public policy**, which ensures a variety of checks and balances for all parties involved in a criminal justice case. You will demonstrate your understanding of due process and illustrate how it is applicable throughout the **different subdomains of the criminal justice system**.
As a **victim’s advocate**, you will assist victims of crime or their families by guiding them through criminal justice proceedings. In situations where you must explain a defendant’s right to due process, a clear understanding of the adjudication process will help you properly serve your clients.
    ##### **Assessment Deliverable**
Research criminal trials in the United States with convictions (e.g., Aaron Hernandez, Jodi Arias, Drew Peterson, Amber Guyger). Select one case to address in your presentation.
Create a **10- to 12-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation** about your chosen case, **illustrating how criminal justice policy and due rights processes were applied** as the case was processed throughout the 3 subdomains of the criminal justice system (law enforcement, courts, corrections).
Audience: Your presentation will be given in a workshop for newly hired victim’s advocates.
Consider the following examples of policies and procedures in criminal justice as you create your presentation:
    – Bail guidelines
    – Jury selection/jury duty/jury instructions/jury deliberations
    – Plea bargaining
    – Sentencing guidelines
    – Truth in sentencing
    – Verdict/mistrial
    – Capital punishment
    – Appeals process
Include the following in your presentation:
    – Case Overview: Describe your selected case from arrest to sentencing and appeal (if applicable).
    – What was the legal basis for making the arrest?
    – What were the trial steps/phases of the case (e.g., jury selection, presentation of evidence, deliberation)?
    – If the defendant appealed, what level of court was involved in the appeal?
    – Criminal Justice Policy and/or Procedures: Provide 2 examples of a criminal justice policy or procedure that had a significant impact on the case in one or more of the criminal justice system subdomains.
    – Due Process: Explain how the due process model was applied in at least 2 subdomains of the criminal justice system (law enforcement, courts, corrections).
    – Relationships Between Subdomains: Explain how police, the courts, and corrections work together to process cases in the criminal justice system. Explain how each of these subdomains influenced the other in the selected case.
Include relevant images to support your ideas.
_Notes_: Use of images is encouraged but not required. The slide count does not include the title, conclusion, or reference list slides.
Cite 2 scholarly sources in addition to the textbook.
Format any citations in your presentation according to APA guidelines.
