    **Assignment**

    1. Review the Background Information:

Following the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 by the U.S. Congress, several large U.S. corporations announced employee bonuses and other incentives as a gesture of goodwill, intending to share the financial benefits from corporate tax cuts with their employees.

In early 2018, United Airlines introduced a lottery system for employee rewards, replacing their traditional annual bonus program. Previously, the average annual bonus was valued at $2,500 per employee. However, this new system quickly
[backfired](http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/05/news/companies/united-airlines-lottery/index.html), leading to significant backlash and public embarrassment for United’s top executives.

    2. Review the Problem Statement:

If you were to conduct your dissertation on this topic, your problem statement would likely focus on United employees' perceptions of replacing annual bonuses (a guaranteed outcome) with lottery-based bonuses (a risk-based outcome). You would also examine the apparent disconnect between employee perceptions and the expectations of United’s top management.

    3. Review the Purpose Statement:

Now, assume you have developed the following purpose statement for your dissertation:

"This research aims to investigate the reasons behind the failure of United Airlines' employee lottery system as a compensation strategy. By examining the disconnect between the goals of top management and the expectations of employees, this study seeks to contribute to a deeper understanding of the factors that influence employees’ perceptions of risk in lotteries, as well as how these perceptions vary based on socio-economic and demographic factors."

    4. Writing Research Questions and Hypotheses:

    · Develop at least two research questions for this study.

    · These questions should align with the purpose statement and explore whether the failure of United’s bonus system was due to differences in employee attitudes toward risk.

    · For example, you may consider the findings from the article “From Risk-Seeking to Risk-Averse: The Development of Economic Risk Preference from Childhood to Adulthood” by
[Paulsen et al. (2012)](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3436335/), which explores how factors like age influence risk preferences.

    · After formulating your research questions, create at least three research hypotheses associated with these questions.

    · At least one of the hypotheses must be directional.

    · Assume that you will use a variable called “risk tolerance” to measure attitudes toward risk, where higher values indicate a greater appetite for risk.

    1. Introductory Criteria

    1. Provide this study with a title.

    2. Restate the background information (provided above).

    2. Problem and Purpose Summary

Small mistakes are the stepping stones to large failures.  How might this saying apply to the theory of marginal analysis (discussed in Chapters 1 & 2 of your textbook)? In your responses, provide an example of a seemingly small mistake with large consequences.

    Jeffrey

Discussion #1 Answer no more than 200 words

    Hi Class,

Hope everyone had a great weekend! The saying "small mistakes are the stepping stones to large failures" really makes sense when you think about marginal analysis, which we learned about in Chapters 1 and 2. Marginal analysis is all about weighing the extra cost and extra benefit of doing just a little more or a little less of something. Since it focuses on small, step-by-step decisions, even tiny mistakes can add up and lead to much bigger problems over time.

A greater example is what happened with All Nippon Airways in April. Because of a currency conversion error on their Vietnamese website, some first class and business class tickets were listed for a few hundred dollars instead of the usual several thousand. One person reportedly bought over $250K worth of flights for just $17K. This small mistake in their pricing system could have cost the airline millions.

Looking at this through marginal analysis, the airline failed to properly compare the cost of offering those high-end seats to the money they were making from them. A small technical mistake made the whole system misjudge the value of each seat. It might have seemed like a minor error in the moment, but when it was repeated across many ticket sales, the consequences were huge.

This example shows that even small errors in how we think about costs and benefits can spiral out of control if we’re not careful. Whether it’s in business or in our personal lives, taking the time to make thoughtful decisions using marginal analysis can help us avoid turning small problems into big ones. Every choice matters, even the little ones.

Discussion #1 Answer no more than 200 words

    Hello everyone,

As the phrase “small mistakes are the stepping stones to large failures” suggests, marginal analysis plays an important role in economics and decision-making. The concept of marginal analysis evaluates the effect of small changes on the performance of an organization. (Mankiw, 2020) By balancing marginal costs against marginal benefits, firms can determine the optimal level of production or investment.

The short-term appearance of a seemingly innocuous decision, such as slightly underpricing a product to remain competitive, may be misleading. As a result of these small, consistent losses, the business will experience significant losses if this pricing strategy does not cover marginal costs. Over time, these small, consistent losses can cause significant losses, even leading to business failure. As a result of marginal misjudgments, a company may hire more people than necessary, underutilize resources, or produce less efficiently, giving rise to larger strategic problems (Investopedia, 2023)

Blockbuster, for example, failed to invest early in digital streaming, leading to its collapse as Netflix and other competitors tapped into consumer demand, leading to its collapse over time. By ignoring innovation's marginal benefits, you can run the risk of ignoring them.It is essential that marginal analysis is used consistently to guide incremental decisions in pricing, hiring, marketing, and production. Failure to do so may result in major operational and financial problems.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

The purpose of this assignment is to draft an internal business proposal presentation to share with organization personnel you would like to sponsor or support you in the implementation of the problem solution you have suggested. You will do this by creating a PowerPoint presentation and recording yourself with Zoom giving the presentation.
**Part 1: Creating the Business Proposal Presentation**
Review the "Stakeholder Analysis" assignment you completed in Topic 2 to determine the key stakeholders that will make up the audience for this presentation. Focus on identifying decision makers that will have the power and resources to approve the implementation of the solution. These are typically your supervisors and key organization personnel.
Construct a 5- to 10-slide PowerPoint presentation that addresses the following. You are required to include speaker notes for each slide.
    1. Problem and related research
    2. Proposed solution and related research
    3. Details for implementing the solution
    4. Details for evaluating the effectiveness of the solution
    5. As part of the presentation, you must include slides that provide text along with visual representations of the data you have collected. The visuals should include the three graphs or charts that you created from the data collected in your research during Topic 2.
**Part 2: Pitching the Business Proposal Presentation**
Once the presentation is ready, you will film yourself pitching the idea to the stakeholder audience. It is important that you dress professionally and practice your presentation prior to filming. Assume you will be talking to organization leadership not as a student, but as a change maker within the organization. In the presentation, your job is to use the PowerPoint slides as a tool and visual reference while you present the problem, your proposed solution, and your plan for implementing the solution. The key to success is utilizing your research and presentation skills to clearly articulate the information to these key stakeholders while also identifying their specific call to action.
After you have practiced your presentation, use Zoom to record your presentation and submit the link and presentation to the instructor. Please include the link on the title slide of your presentation. Refer to the Topic 7 Resources for additional guidance on recording your presentation with Zoom.
Refer to the resource, "Creating Effective PowerPoint Presentations," located in the Student Success Center, for additional guidance on completing this assignment in the appropriate style.
While APA style is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and documentation of sources should be presented using APA formatting guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.
This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.
You are not required to submit this assignment to LopesWrite.

    • Must be three to four double-spaced pages in length (not including title and references
pages) and formatted according to APA

Format your paper according to your assignment instructions: APA, MLA, Chicago Style
The following sample includes APA-style citations and references.
Page numbers are not required when citing paraphrased
information. However, you may include them if doing so would
better direct readers to the information cited.

Outline: Argumentative Paper on Obesity and Government Intervention
    I. Introduction
    a. Thesis: The obesity epidemic needs a government intervention because the
medical costs associated with obesity cost taxpayers money, unhealthy foods need
tighter regulations, and schools need to provide healthier options.
II. Short Response 1: The medical cost associated with weight-related issues has
    significantly contributed to individual taxes.
    a. Supporting evidence: “…the costs of obesity arising from individuals’ poor
nutritional choices are borne by society as a whole through taxes, lost
productivity, and an overburdened healthcare system. In 2008, the medical costs
associated with obesity and obesity-related illnesses totaled US $147 billion in the
United States” (Franck et al., 2013, p. 1951).
    i. Explanation: This quote demonstrates not only the connection between
obesity, medical costs, and increased taxes, but also shows the exact costs
    from a fairly recent year.
ii. So what?: This quote supports the claim that weight-related medical
issues contribute to increased taxes for all taxpayers by explaining the
connection and demonstrating the high dollar costs to show that this is a
current problem affecting a government process (taxation) and therefore
could appropriately be addressed by government intervention.
III. Short Response 2: Another reason that weight should be considered a governmental
issue is that the market for unhealthy food in America has overtaken the general food
market and the government needs to actively curb the incentives to frequent these
    establishments.
    a. Supporting Evidence: “[M]eals are increasingly being consumed outside the
home, and these meals tend to be higher in fat. A literal fat tax… theoretically
would encourage individuals to opt for low-fat or nonfat alternatives” (Franck et
    al., 2013, p. 1951).
    i. Explanation: This quote alludes to many of the main problems with fast
food consumption and explains what a fat tax would attempt to do to curb
    the consumption of junk food.
ii. So what?: Showing that a fat tax would be able to curb overconsumption
of obesity-causing fast food demonstrates the need for the government to
    impose such a thing.
IV. Short Response 3: Finally, the government is responsible for ensuring that children
have access to healthy food and exercise while in school.
    a. Supporting Evidence: A connection between Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!”
campaign and a reduction in overall childhood obesity across America has been
    demonstrated (Tucker, 2013, p. 5).
    i. Explanation: This information shows the effectiveness of government-
backed programs, with “Let’s Move!” as the specific example.

    · Summarize a brief, professional history about the lead officer, Derek Chauvin.

    · Analyze the social unrest that occurred after Floyd’s death.

    · Support the analysis with scholarly or credible sources that explain the scale of the protests, specifically identifying cities and the impacts to areas that experienced civil unrest.

    · Analyze in detail how this case did not violate the Amendment V’s prohibition against double jeopardy.

    · Summarize three major provisions of your choosing found in the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act of 2021.

    · Evaluate the civil settlement received by the Floyd family from the City of Minneapolis as a result of the actions of police officer Chauvin.

Small mistakes are the stepping stones to large failures.  How might this saying apply to the theory of marginal analysis (discussed in Chapters 1 & 2 of your textbook)? In your responses, provide an example of a seemingly small mistake with large consequences.

    **Exploring Personal Bias**
Earlier in the course, you examined the importance of a diverse and inclusive culture. An inhibitor of this type of culture can be found through personal biases, which people often have without even realizing it. Individuals and organizations can help create a better culture by first acknowledging these biases and then taking steps to address them. It is important for managers to examine their own thoughts, behaviors, values, and biases to ensure they set a precedent for others.

Using the recommendation you provided in Milestone One, you will develop a strategy to implement the IoT innovation and move ahead in the marketplace.
You work as a middle manager for one of the top U.S. producers of luxury and mass-market automobiles and trucks. To remain a viable competitor and meet the demands of consumers’ desire for technology, your company’s chief technology officer (CTO) has decided to implement the internet of things (IoT) in your company’s product line. You are now leading a cross-functional team to move forward with the company initiative.
In Milestone One, you and your cross-functional team looked at the risks and benefits of discontinuous and incremental innovation, competitors in the market, and your company’s internal capability for moving forward with the IoT innovation. After doing this analysis, you presented your recommendation to various stakeholders about how to proceed. You chose one of the following:
    1. Design a completely new product line, based on the recent technology (discontinuous innovation)or
    2. Add recent technology features into one model and then incrementally into the broader product line (incremental innovation)
The CTO has accepted your recommendation. Now you are ready to develop a strategy for taking the innovation to market. In order to develop a strategy, you will need to look at your competitors’ relative strengths in the current marketplace, to understand how your company compares to your competitors, and to identify the total market and the market’s annual growth rate. Finally, you also need to share your thoughts on how to respond to changes in business conditions. Although no one can predict what is going to happen, it is important to think about how flexible your plan is in order to meet unexpected conditions.
    ## Directions
Using the recommendation you provided in Milestone One, develop a strategic plan to implement the innovation and gain competitive advantage. Use Power BI to analyze the Comparative Growth Data included in the Power BI User Manual linked in the Supporting Materials section. You should also refer to the Sales Forecast, Comparative Growth Data, and Comparative Operating Statistics linked in the Module One Memo Guidelines and Rubric to complete this milestone.
Specifically, you must address the following rubric criteria:
    1. Follow the directions in this document to create the required charts using Power BI. Analyze the **competitors’ relative strengths** in the marketplace.
    1. Write a short paragraph describing the growth rate of each competitor based on the data included in the comparative growth data sheet.
    2. How much of the market does each competitor now own? Do you see a trend of gaining or losing market share? Present your findings using the comparative growth data sheet and Power BI.
    1. Complete your pie charts and analysis for the market share percentage of cars and trucks now and in 2030.
    2. Complete your pie charts and analysis for the market share percentage of connected cars and trucks now and in 2030.
    3. Determine each competitor’s financial strength by looking at their comparative growth data.
    2. Explain how your **company’s market share** compares to your competitors’.
    1. Is your company gaining or losing market share from 2020 to 2030? Expand on the analysis done in Task 1 above and explain the major factors behind the change in market share.
    2. What is your company's growth potential in the industry?
    3. How do your company's financials look compared to your competitors'?
    3. Identify **future potential total available market (TAM)** and growth for each chosen product/service and technology.
    1. What is the global TAM for annual cars and light trucks in 2020, in billions?
    2. What is the global TAM for IoT-connected cars and light trucks in billions?
    3. What is the projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for cars and light trucks?
    4. What is the projected CAGR for IoT-connected cars and light trucks?
    4. Identify ways to adjust if **business conditions change.**
    1. What strategies can you implement if your customers are slow to purchase the innovation?
    2. What actions can you take if one competitor is overtaking all the others, including your company?
    5. Describe the steps your company needs to take from **concept** outline **to launch.** Consider your learnings from the previous two modules to ensure the steps are easy to understand for your team.
    1. What is the size and scope of development that will be necessary to successfully launch the IoT innovation?
    2. Will you require additional capital and personnel to support the development and launch?
    3. How would you approach determining the timeline from the beginning of development until initial product launch?
    4. Consider key milestones, relevant metrics, project phases, and any tools or methods you would use for measuring progress.
Submit a 4-page Word document, devoting one page to each critical element described above, along with an introduction and a short executive summary. Include a screenshot of the charts created for competitors’ relative strengths using Power BI on page 1. Place the graphic at the top of the page with bullets underneath. Sources should be cited according to APA style. Consult the [Shapiro Library APA Style Guide](http://libguides.snhu.edu/apa) for more information on citations.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

Complete a proposal for a scenario where you need to develop a strategy to reduce the overall budget by 10 percent.
INTRODUCTION: **Note:** The assessments in this course build upon each other, so you are strongly encouraged to complete them in sequence.
In this assessment, you will put your newly acquired skills to work as you dissect an actual budget and make decisions on where cuts can and must be made. You will use the information that you've gathered over the previously to make informed and empathetic decisions about how your limited resources will be spent. You will take into account the information you have from your department heads as well as the information your gathered about current wage scales in your area in an attempt to bring your budget back into line while not sacrificing quality, regulatory compliance, or the welfare of your staff both personally and professionally. This will be a challenging assessment, but one that healthcare leaders are facing every day and one that you will no doubt face in your career. Try to be as realistic as possible in your recommendations, keeping in mind not only the well-being of your organization and customers, but also that most budget cuts in healthcare come from the payroll and there are real-life consequences in those decisions for everyone in your charge.
    – How can internal benchmarks be used to help identify best practices within an organization?
    – How might an organization use external benchmarks to measure and monitor performance?
    – What is a scorecard, and how is it used to track financial performance?
You will delve into the various financial reports that you might see in your work as a healthcare leader. You will take them apart and examine the different parts of each report and when and why it would be appropriate. You'll also look at the different types of financial ratios that you will work with and what important information is gleaned from those ratios as you make decisions about the operations and future of the organization that you are charged with leading.
Finally, you will wrap up this course with the opportunity to learn about investments and financing in healthcare. Oftentimes, healthcare operations are financed by outside entities as our revenue cycle can be very long and accounts payable are not usually collected within 30 days. As a result, we often need to look to outside financing for short-term cash needs. Additionally, our expenses, such as radiology equipment or upgrades to buildings and plant operations, can be much more than we can carry and outside financing is needed. You will have the opportunity for a high-level look at financing those endeavors through business loans and investments.
OVERVIEW: You will develop a 10-percent budget reduction proposal for the scenario in the Staffing and Budgeting Dilemmas in Health Care media.
PREPARATION: Complete the [Staffing and Budgeting Dilemmas in Health Care](https://media.capella.edu/CourseMedia/element240165/wrapper.asp) media activity using the [Financial Statement [XLSX]](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/46722/files/8761487/download) document. The scenario in this media introduces you to your department heads and what their specific needs and concerns are regarding the budget. This should influence your decision about priorities and what you may want to avoid when cutting back. In addition, conduct individual research to see what the literature suggests to address this problem.
INSTRUCTION: Use the [Budget Reduction Proposal Template [DOCX[](https://courseroom.capella.edu/courses/46722/files/8761488/download) to complete your recommendations.

    – Address the following in the introductory page for this request:
    – Would you reduce each line item by 10 percent? Why is this the best approach? Also, how do you intend to handle fixed costs with this approach?
    – Would you select specific line items to reduce by 10 percent? Why is this the best approach? If so, how would you pinpoint which line items to reduce?
    – Would you put a freeze on all hiring, training, travel, and purchasing? Why is this the best approach?
    – What other ideas do you have to cut your overall budget by 10 percent without affecting the care that you provide?
    – Explain how the reduced operating budget aligns with an organization's target profit margin.
    – Offer at least one solution to reduce the budget by 10 percent.
    – These recommendations may include multiple line items and may overlap but should be a separate and distinct option for senior leadership to consider.
    – For example, in one recommendation, you suggest cutting department heads, reducing food costs, and eliminating bonuses to get you to the magic number. In a separate recommendation, you may suggest reducing overall staffing, eliminating bonuses, and reducing food costs.
    – Prior to making your recommendations, be sure to review the Staffing and Budgeting Dilemmas in Health Care media, introducing you to your department heads and what their specific needs and concerns are regarding the budget. This should influence your decision about priorities and what you may want to avoid when cutting back.
    – Do some research to see what the literature is suggesting to address this problem.

Be sure to include references to at least two scholarly and/or authoritative sources in your operating budget proposal. Follow current APA guidelines for in-text citations and references.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Your assessment should also meet the following requirements:

    – **Written communication:** Writing is clear, logical, succinct, and free of errors that detract from the overall message.
    – **Length:** 3–4 pages including introduction and summary. Provide 1–2 pages for each recommendation, plus a title page and reference pages.
    – **Font and font size:** Times New Roman, 12 point.
    – **Title page:** Include a title page in APA format as part of your operating budget proposal.
    – **Citations and references:** Include references to a **minimum** of two current scholarly and/or authoritative sources. Current means no more than five years old.
    – **APA format:** Use APA format for the title page, proposal, citations, and references. For an APA refresher, review the [Evidence and APAsection of the Writing Center.](https://lat.strategiced.com/redirect?linkid=1540)

COMPETENCIES MESURED: By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and rubric criteria:

    – Competency 1: Develop financial strategies to address dynamic environmental forces.
    – Explain reducing each line item by 10 percent.
    – Explain selecting specific line items to reduce by 10 percent.
