    **Main Entry Parts 1**
    **and 2**

    **Part 1: Neurophysiology of Emotions**

Think about times in your life when you have experienced incredible happiness (e.g., you received an award, your favorite team won the national championship, etc.) and were very fearful (e.g., speaking to a large group of strangers, performing on stage for the first time, etc.).

    a. Describe how your arousal appeared physically.

    b. Connect these changes in arousal to what you’ve learned about the neurobiology of emotions – what hormones, neurotransmitters, etc. are likely involved in these effects?

    c. Describe some of the stimuli that helped you to determine what emotion you were experiencing.

**Part 2: Neurophysiology of Social Connection and Motivation**

This unit, you watched a TED talk by Johann Hari called
_Everything You Know About Addiction is Wrong_. This is a powerful look into how our species’ evolutionary drive to work and connect with each other and how disruptions to this cycle simultaneously cause and fuel cycles of addiction. After watching, answer the following questions:

    a. Explain, using terms and concepts you learned this unit about the neurobiology of motivation, social behavior, and emotions, why the rats in rat park did not use the “drug water.”

    b. You are a neurobiologist and you’ve been asked to explain to a panel of American lawmakers why Portugal is having success with its approach to addiction recovery. Explain this from your informed point of view, given what you know about reward pathways and the neurobiology of motivation and relationships. Be specific.

    c. Discuss your reaction to and perspective on Hari’s point that to treat addiction we must not just focus on the individual, but focus on society at large, too. Does this make sense to you from a neurobiology standpoint? Explain why or why not. What suggestions would you make if asked how to go about instituting such a change?

    Writing Assignment Week 2

**Advanced Practice Nursing: Clinical Decision-Making and Leadership Essay**

**Overview:** This assignment invites you to explore the evolution of clinical decision-making as you transition from bedside nursing to advanced practice roles. In your essay, you will critically analyze and compare the decision-making skills, leadership approaches, and ethical considerations required at the bedside versus those required of advanced practice nurses (APNs), such as nurse practitioners (NPs) and nurse leaders.

Your discussion must integrate the following course outcomes throughout your analysis:

    ·
**Outcome 1:** Demonstrate understanding of the impact of legal and ethical issues, and healthcare policy on decision-making in a real, complex healthcare environment.

    ·
**Outcome 2:** Synthesize multidimensional approaches of decision-making learned throughout the course to evaluate patient outcomes.

    ·
**Outcome 3:** Apply thoughtful leadership approaches to implement successful changes in your practice.

    ·
**Outcome 4:** Apply multiple decision-making approaches—including transformational leadership principles—in actual situations to demonstrate confidence in decision making.

    **Assignment Instructions**

    **Writing Requirements:**

    ·
**Format: Prepare your submission as an essay. The document must include a cover page, clearly structured level headings (in adherence with APA 7th Edition standards), and a reference list.**

    ·
**Length: The primary text should be a minimum of 4 pages (excluding the cover page and references).**

    ·
**Style: Write at a graduate level using formal academic language. Your analysis should be thorough, critical, and reflective of the course readings and other current academic literature.**

    ·
**APA Guidelines: All in-text citations and the reference list must follow APA 7th Edition guidelines. 5 references**

    **Essay Topics and Guiding Questions**

Your essay should address the following topics and questions:

**Transitioning from Bedside Nursing to Advanced Practice:**

    · As nurses, you have all learned the importance of clinical decision-making, critical thinking, and clinical judgment for ensuring safe and effective patient care.

    ·
**Question:** As you move into your advanced practice role—whether in leadership, management, or as an NP—how do these decision-making processes change? Does your approach need to shift, and if so, why?

    **Comparing Skill Sets:**

    ·
**Question:** Is there a difference between the decision-making and leadership skills required by bedside nurses compared to those needed by APNs?

    ·
**Guidance:** Support your discussion with rationale drawn from the course readings and relevant academic literature. Consider using examples from practice scenarios to highlight these differences.

    **Critical Decision-Making for Future Roles:**

    ·
**Question:** As you transition into your role as an APN, which clinical decision-making skills are most critical—especially for nurses planning to become NPs versus those pursuing nurse leadership?

    ·
**Guidance:** Present a rationale for your choices, referencing course readings and scholarly research. Reflect on how multidimensional decision-making approaches can influence patient outcomes.

    **Standardized Decision-Making Tools:**

    ·
**Question:** What standardized decision-making tool has been developed to guide nurses at all levels in making practice decisions?

    ·
**Guidance:** Explain why this tool was created, its intended purpose, and how it standardizes decision-making across varying clinical settings.

    ·
**Question:** How would you apply this tool in your current or future role as an APN? Provide specific examples of its application in real clinical scenarios.

**Additional Tools and the Consensus Model for APRNs:**

    ·
**Question:** Are there other standardized clinical decision-making tools available for APNs and NPs? Evaluate whether these tools are employed consistently across care settings and offer a rationale for their use (or limitations).

    ·
**Question:** Describe the role of the Consensus Model for APRNs and discuss how it informs decision-making processes in advanced practice settings.

    **Submission Requirements**

    ·
**Content:** Ensure all discussion questions are addressed comprehensively and supported with both course readings and additional academic sources.

    ·
    **Structure:**

    ·
**Introduction:** Provide an overview of your essay’s scope, the significance of the transition to an advanced practice role, and a brief outline of what will be discussed.

    ·
**Body:** Develop each question in dedicated sections with clear APA-style headings.

    ·
**Conclusion:** Summarize and synthesize the main points of your discussion, highlighting the importance of legal, ethical, and policy considerations in advanced clinical decision-making and leadership.

    ·
**References:** Include a minimum of four scholarly sources published within the past five years. Follow APA guidelines for all citations and references.

    ·
**Formatting:** Maintain APA style consistency throughout—this includes using a 12-point Times New Roman font, 1-inch margins, and double-spaced text.

    **## CriticalReviewinstructions.docx**

    **Critical Review of Published Article**

Mastery of statistics involves not only the ability to generate sound statistical results, but also the ability to critically evaluate the statistical analysis of others.  This is the focus of this assignment.  A critique is not a summary or a simple retelling of the major findings in a research article.  It is more than that and the results may make the difference between believing research results and using them, or not believing results and not using them.

The critique should critically review (not summarize) the article discussed.  You should concentrate your analysis and critique on the data and the analysis of the data (statistics) presented.  Do they support the conclusions reached by the author(s)?  Why or why not?  You do not have to agree with the conclusions reached during the discussion.  If you do not agree, you should argue why you do not based on information contained in the article you are critiquing.  If you believe important information or analysis is missing, you should also reference that.   Similarly, if you agree, you should state why based on information presented in the article.

The paper should be three pages not including the title page.  Points will be deducted if the paper is longer than four pages.

    **Suggested Content**:

The critique should contain a title page, brief introduction and supporting paragraphs.

    **Title Page**:

Includes title of the research article and author’s name(s),
    **your name**, and date.

    **Introduction**:

    · In the opening sentences, introduce the research topic, including the rationale or purpose for conducting the research and its objectives. What question(s) is the researcher trying to answer?  Include identification of independent and dependent variables.

    · State the author’s hypothesis or research question(s)?

    · Briefly state the research methodology.  How did the researcher study the topic?  Survey?  Experiment? Statistical Analysis?  A combination of methods?

    **Supporting paragraphs**:

An in-depth critique of the article (Discuss how well the research is conducted)

Consider the following: (Do not do include any checklists.  This must be a narrative discussion)

    · Purpose

Is the research problem clearly stated?  Is it easy to determine what the researcher intends to research?

    · Objectives/hypotheses

Has a research question or hypothesis been identified?  Is it clearly stated?  Is it consistent with discussion in the article's introduction and purpose?

    · Operational Definitions

Are all terms, theories, and concepts used in the study clearly defined?

    · Methodology

Is the research design and methodology clearly identified?  Has the data gathering instrument been described? Is the instrument appropriate?  How was         it developed?  Were reliability and validity testing undertaken and the results discussed?  Was a pilot study undertaken?

Also consider the following in your discussion:

    · Was the population defined?

    · What is the source of data used in the article?

    · How the sample was selected (probability or nonprobability)?  Was the size of the sample appropriate?

    · Which descriptive statistics were used?  Are they meaningful?

    · If statistical analysis was conducted, was it appropriate and well defined?

    · Do the tables and/or figures appropriately (or inappropriately) display the collected data?

    · Are conclusions in the article backed up appropriately by the tables and statistics presented?

    · If a hypothesis was identified was it supported?  Were the strengths and limitations of the study including generalization discussed?  Was a recommendation for further research made?

    · Were all the books, journals and other media alluded to in the study accurately referenced?

Summing up your impressions is important:

    · Considering all of your observations, is the article well or poorly researched?

    · If you were to conduct the study, please explain the changes you could make to strengthen the validity of the study.

    · Concluding remarks. Drive home the main thrust of your paper.

    Tips for Writing Critiques

    1. The critique should critically review (NOT summarize!) the article discussed.

    2. Go through several drafts. NO ONE can write a perfect essay in one try. Your first draft should be much longer than the final draft. Then as you edit, try to make the same amount of information more concise and clear, continually refining your writing.

    3. Write in formal English avoiding casual language. Though we want to hear your opinions avoid using ‘I’ or ‘me.’ For example, instead of writing: “I think this research overlooked an important factor,” just write, “This research overlooked an important factor.”

    4. Though it is important to have a broad and strong vocabulary, don’t use stilted language for the sake of using fancy words. It makes the paper more difficult to read than is necessary.

    5. Write your critique as if your reader has NOT yet read the paper/essay you are critiquing.

    6. Write in active voice, which is more direct, bold, and concise than passive voice. Examples from
_The Elements of Style_ by William Strunk Jr. and E. B. White:

    7. Run spelling and grammar-checking programs carefully, double-checking the spelling of all specialized and scientific terms your dictionary will not recognize.  Many spelling errors will be caught by these programs and these errors SHOULD NEVER persist in any work that is to be handed in for grading.

    8. Submit as a Word document.  No PDF files.

    9. Double-space

    10. Use 12 point Times New Roman font and 1 inch margins

    11. Use section headings where appropriate

    12. Number all pages after the title page

    13. Do not use quotes from the article, paraphrase
