    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

In this term paper, you are tasked with conducting an in-depth comparative analysis of two criminological theories that have been covered in this course. Your analysis should demonstrate a critical understanding of the theories' key principles, underlying assumptions, and implications for understanding and addressing crime. Choose two theories from the course material and clearly articulate the key tenets of each theory. Compare their similarities in explaining criminal behavior, identifying shared assumptions or conceptual overlaps. Contrast their differences, including how each theory addresses causation, policy implications, and methodological approaches. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of each theory in explaining a specific type of crime (i.e. domestic violence, robbery, sexual assault, battery, shoplifting, arson, etc.). Use examples or case studies to support your arguments. Discuss how the selected theories can be applied to addressing your selected type of crime and select which of your selected theories best explains your selected crime.
The Term Paper Assignment will consist of at least 15 double-spaced pages (excluding title page, references, figures, illustrations, or other extraneous elements outside the main body of the paper). Students will format their paper using 12-point Times New Roman font and one-inch margins. Students will use at least 15 scholarly references (Wikipedia or blogs CANNOT be used as a reference). APA 7th Edition guidelines are to be followed. The structure of the assignment must include the following sections and mandatory headings:
    1. Title Page
    2. Abstract
    3. Introduction (including thesis statement)
    4. Brief Overview of Selected Theories
    5. Comparative Analysis
    6. Critical Evaluation
    7. Application of Theories
    8. Conclusion
    9. References
    TOPIC OVERVIEW:
Parricide, the act of killing one’s parent(s), is a rare but deeply troubling form of homicide that often involves a combination of psychological, biological, and situational factors. These cases are frequently associated with juveniles or individuals who have experienced prolonged abuse, mental illness, or trauma. This paper examines parricide through the frameworks of **rational choice theory** and **biosocial criminological theory** to explore the extent to which offenders engage in deliberate cost-benefit analysis versus being influenced by innate biological and psychological predispositions. While rational choice theory emphasizes the offender’s capacity for calculated decision-making, biosocial theory integrates neurological, genetic, and environmental influences that may compromise rational judgment. This comparison aims to uncover which theory better accounts for the motivations and circumstances surrounding parricide.
    THESIS STATEMENT TO USE:
This paper will evaluate the crime of parricide through the lenses of rational choice theory and biosocial criminological theory to determine which framework more effectively explains the motivations behind such offenses. While rational choice theory suggests that individuals weigh costs and benefits before committing crimes, biosocial theory considers the interaction of genetic, neurological, and environmental influences that may predispose individuals to violent behavior. This analysis will argue that biosocial theory offers a more comprehensive explanation of parricide, particularly in cases involving juveniles and individuals with histories of abuse or mental health disorders, where rational decision-making processes may be impaired or overridden by biological and psychological factors.
    PROBLEM STATEMENT:
Parricide presents a significant challenge in criminology due to its emotional complexity and the frequent involvement of young offenders or those with a history of trauma and mental illness. Traditional deterrence-based models may fail to account for offenders whose biological or psychological impairments hinder rational decision-making. Rational choice theory provides insight into conscious cost-benefit reasoning but may not fully explain extreme familial violence stemming from long-term trauma or neurobiological dysfunction. This paper argues that understanding parricide requires a deeper investigation into biosocial factors that interact with social environments, helping to shape the offender’s behavior beyond rational calculation.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

_In Week 4, you will be asked to describe your visit to court! Everyone should make an attempt to visit a local, county, or state court during a time when a trial can be observed. You may call the clerk’s office, explaining your assignment politely and succinctly, and asking for recommended dates and times._
Ideally, you will find a trial that is short enough to be observed in its entirety. Even better, you might find one utilizing an expert witness, or even a psychologist as the expert witness!
Please learn appropriate courtroom decorum by observation, and please behave accordingly. You do not need to dress up, but neither should you dress down. Sloppy or suggestive clothing is inappropriate. Do not bring weapons, food or drink, or cell phones into the courthouse. Be quiet and unobtrusive.
Alternate Assignment: If you cannot make time during the work day to observe a trial, you may read an account of a trial, such as (1) _A Civil Action_ by Jonathan Harr (1996), or (2) an account of the workings of a justice system, such as _No Matter How Loud I Shout_: _A Year in the Life of Juvenile Court_ by E. Humes (1996).
Other written accounts (non-fiction) or televised trials (which can sometimes be found on Court TV may be substituted (check with Instructor!) Other possible choices include _A Trial by Jury_ by D. G. Burnett (2001), _Subway Gunman: A Juror’s Account of the Bernard Goetz Trial_ by Mark Lesley, et al. (1988).
Your assignment in Week 4 will be to post a 2-3 paragraph response to your trial (or alternate assignment). Don’t summarize! Just tell us what stood out for you, what surprised you, or something you learned. Please, use correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation, as well as correct APA format when you cite anything published.

    discussion post 1:
A few years ago, I was part of a tight friend group that regularly planned weekend activities together. There was someone named Alex who wasn’t officially in our group but often joined us. When we were organizing a hiking trip one weekend, the topic of whether to invite Alex came up. Most of the group decided not to include Alex, saying things like “the group is small” or “Alex tends to slow us down.” Even though I felt uncomfortable about leaving Alex out, I didn’t voice my concerns and just went along with the group.
At the time, I felt torn—part of me didn’t want to create conflict or be seen as different, but another part felt guilty for excluding Alex without a clear reason. I convinced myself it was just a one-time thing and that Alex would understand. But looking back, I realize I was avoiding the fact that we were intentionally excluding someone.
If I could do it again, I would handle it differently. I’d try to discuss the situation with the group and be more mindful of Alex’s feelings, or suggest doing a separate activity with them. I now understand that exclusion can hurt people and damage relationships, and that advocating for inclusion—even when it feels uncomfortable—is important.
    discussion post 2:
An experience in my professional life where I did not take action was when I was working as a paraprofessional. A paraprofessional is someone that plays a huge role in helping students especially those with special needs. I remember a time when I was working with fifth graders and supporting a couple of students a once who had an IEP. This day the teacher had us working in groups solving math problems. We all had five math problems to solve and once we were done one person from the group had to go up to the projector and show everyone how they got the answer. Many of the students were very shy and did not want to participate at first but after a couple of students went up they eventually participated. When it came time to my group of students the teacher chose one of the most shy students of the group and once his name was called his face and demeanor changed. He began to stutter when he was explaining his work and his hands were shaking in the projector. As he was explaining his work I noticed there was a group of students whispering and smirking and pointing to where he was and I wanted to say something but the other teacher did not call any attention to them. I felt that if I said something then the teacher would be upset and everyone would be staring at my student. At the time I felt very upset and disappointed in myself for not speaking up for my student. Looking back now I would most definitely speak up for him and say something to those students that were making him feel uncomfortable. As a paraprofessional my responsibility is to support my students academically and emotionally which is why I would have done things differently.
