SUBJECT: Volunteer Project Participation for UWA Student in CO 506

    Life-Span Development and Learning

This term, students in CO 506, Life-Span Development and Learning at the University of West Alabama are asked to do an activity of practical experience with a person concerning a life challenge and building back resilience after the challenge. This will consist of the UWA student asking some questions of their volunteer. If the volunteer is 18 years old or younger, the UWA may also ask questions of a parent or caregiver and signatures would be needed for both the volunteer and the caregiver. The student will share the questions with you before getting your signature on this letter and give you time to think about the questions before officially noting your answers. Feel free to ask for clarification and also to share what you want to with the questions asked. Through this, the student will learn how to apply what he or she is learning in the class to help him or her work with people of all age ranges through many types of life challenges.

In order for the student to work with you or your child, we need the bottom of this form signed with both the volunteer and the parent or caregiver signature to indicate agreement to participate. As this is a class project, the student is asked to maintain strict confidentiality in the written information kept to submit to the instructor. This form of agreement is the only place where we ask for full name as you provide signatures.

I have signed this letter as the instructor and have included my contact information. Please contact me if you have any questions about this class project.

Thank you so much for working with the UWA student in provision of a valuable experience for the class.

    Sincerely,

    Sincerely,

    **Statistics Discussion Board Prompt**
**First:** consider the difference between correlation and causation. How would you describe these two terms to a fellow coworker? Why is it misleading to argue that correlational data demonstrates a cause-effect relationship?
**Next:** Locate an article that demonstrates either correlation or causation. Describe, the methodology that was used in the study and the results that were obtained. What conclusions can be stated from the data? If your study used correlation, what is the danger of arguing that one variable caused the other? If your study used causation, what are the limitations of applying a causal relationship identified in research to a real-world setting?
    **A note on sources**
Only scholarly sources are acceptable in graduate-level discussion posts and must be properly cited according to APA 7th edition.

In response to your peers, highlight in detail and discuss how these roles impact healthcare within specific industries and how that differs at different organizations. How does this impact the management of information? Share some of the technology that these roles employ to support a specific industry.
    LISA POST
The roles and functions of nurses vary significantly depending on the healthcare setting, and this directly influences how they use technology and how information is managed.
In hospital settings, nurses often work in fast-paced environments where they rely heavily on real-time data and advanced technologies. They use Electronic Health Records, smart IV pumps, portable monitors, and clinical decision support systems to manage patient care efficiently (ANA, 2024).
Nurses in Insurance Organizations focus more on data analysis, case management, and claims review. They use health informatics systems to assess treatment plans, verify coding accuracy, and ensure compliance with insurance policies (Interview Guy, n.d.). Their interaction with technology is more administrative and analytical, often involving population health data and predictive analytics tools.
Nurses in Practitioner Offices typically use simpler EHR systems, scheduling software, and basic diagnostic tools. Their role is more patient-facing and involves routine care, patient education, and coordination of follow-up care.
The differences in these roles affect how information is managed. Information is collected, shared, and utilized in distinct ways. Hospital nurses record detailed, real-time clinical data, while insurance nurses work with coded data for managing insurance claims (Interview Guy, n.d.). In hospitals, data sharing is immediate and important for patient safety, whereas in insurance contexts, data is shared mainly for compliance and reimbursement purposes. Clinical nurses use data to make care decisions, insurance nurses use it to assess risk and validate claims, and office nurses utilize it to coordinate care and manage appointments.
Understanding these distinctions is crucial in healthcare IT. Designing systems that accommodate the specific needs of each role ensures better compliance, efficiency, and patient outcomes. A one-size-fits-all approach to technology in nursing can lead to inefficiencies, errors, and dissatisfaction among users.
    KEISHA POST
A common misconception in healthcare is that nurses perform the same roles and use technology similarly across all healthcare settings. In reality, a nurse’s role and interaction with technology vary significantly depending on the type of organization they work in, such as a hospital, a healthcare insurance company, or a practitioner’s office. In a hospital setting, nurses are primarily involved in direct patient care. They use advanced technology such as electronic health records (EHRs), clinical decision support systems (CDSS), and patient monitoring devices to track vital signs, administer medications, and respond to emergencies. Their work demands real-time data access and accurate documentation to ensure safe and timely care. In contrast, nurses employed by health insurance organizations often work as case managers or utilization review specialists. Their responsibilities involve analyzing patient data, reviewing claims for medical necessity, and providing education or follow-up care to high-risk populations. These nurses rely heavily on data analytics platforms, claims processing systems, and secure communication tools rather than clinical devices.
In a practitioner’s office or outpatient clinic, nurses focus more on routine care such as triaging patients, administering vaccinations, updating health records, and coordinating referrals. They use simplified EHR systems tailored to smaller clinical environments and interact with patient portals for scheduling and communication. These distinct roles significantly influence how healthcare information is collected, managed, and utilized. For example, hospitals require sophisticated systems capable of managing vast amounts of real-time clinical data, whereas insurance organizations focus on large-scale data aggregation and risk stratification. Clinics prioritize efficiency in data entry and continuity of care. These differences affect information management practices, including interoperability, privacy controls, and data accuracy. Understanding these role-specific differences is essential for designing effective health information technology (HIT) systems that support workflow efficiency and patient safety. As noted by Hebda, Hunter, and Czar (2019), aligning health IT tools with specific nursing roles enhances usability and reduces the risk of errors. Similarly, Sensmeier (2020) emphasizes the importance of nurse informaticists in bridging clinical practice and technology by ensuring that health IT systems meet the diverse needs of users across different healthcare settings. In conclusion, recognizing the variation in nursing roles across industries is critical to managing health information effectively and supporting optimal patient outcomes.

    **Quality Improvement Initiative**

Quality Improvement (QI) Initiative Project Description: You are an advanced practice nurse (APN) leader at a local non-profit community hospital, St. Mary’s General Hospital (this is a created hospital system and not meant to be associated with any real hospital system). You have been approached by your Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) as a leader to create and develop a hospital-wide initiative promoting Quality Improvement among nurses. This paper will focus on implementing a hospital wide QI initiative. Please follow the specific grading rubric below as this outline how you will be graded. The first section generally outlines the assignment and may provide some additional guidance on points that need additional clarification for the student above what is described in the grading rubric.

    1. Develop a hospital-wide initiative that promotes QIengagement and skill development by nurses. The nurse leader is expected to befamiliar with QI process and what is needed to ensure successful engagement bynurses within the facility. This assignment requires that students be familiarwith concepts that have been introduced at the undergraduate level such asquality improvement and leadership styles and approaches. The difference at thegraduate level is active engagement in learning rather than passive learning andwill require the student to evaluate, analyze and develop the concepts learnedat the undergraduate level. The introduction and conclusion sections areclearly outlined in the grading rubric below (refer to the grading rubric). Each section of the paper is expected to be well supported by the literature, evidence, best practice and research. This means that students are expected tointegrate multiple literature sources and not rely on one source to inform themajority or even a large part of the paper. Minimally the paper should includeat least 12 references but will likely include more. I check references soplease make sure that the references align and are actually used to support thestatements and viewpoints that you are making in the paper otherwise they failto be ‘supporting’ evidence to back these statements and are therefore opinionand have no place in an academic graduate level paper.

    2. Few key points.

    3. Review and follow the grading rubric andmake sure that you are meeting each of the points outlined in the gradingrubric; failure to do so results in lower grade. The vaguer and morenon-specific the student is in the paper the lower the grade. The reason forthis is that vagueness suggests failure to understand the concept in the paper.Clear and detailed is not synonymous with lengthy, actually detailed andsuccinct is the preferable approach because being both too brief and failing toprovide an adequate understanding of the concepts will suggest lack ofunderstanding and too lengthy and writing as much as possible hoping that youhit upon something that matches the grading rubric criteria is also failure tounderstand the concepts. Do not submit vague and nonspecific information oryour grade will reflect failure to demonstrate understanding. Failure to followthe grading rubric will result in a non-passing grade and you have 1opportunity to submit assignments in this class, refer to the syllabus forgrading policy and submissions guidelines.

    4. For instance, the background and significancesection outline clearly the following in the grading rubric: Identifiesand describes quality improvement (QI); its importance to healthcarefacilities, patients, and stakeholders. How this links QI to all levels ofnursing practice and specifically it’s importance to nurse leaders. What is thefirst step the nurse leader needs to take to fulfill the task assigned by theCNO with a detailed rationale that provides information about the specifictools and measures, interpretation, and application of the findings to guidethe nurse leader’s decision making about the QI initiative. This suggeststhat you are looking for a specific first step that involves a tool or measure,so that is hinting and suggesting the student should be familiar with how QI knowledge, skills and engagement are determined by a nurse leader.

Please make sure that you are usingthe provided document to complete the assignment when the syllabus asks thatyou align the QI initiative with St. Mary’s mission, vision and strategic plan.

This assignment is to be submitted as an essay- with an introduction, questions developed at the graduate level, and a conclusion to summarize and synthesize key points. APA must be strictly followed. The page requirement for this project will be a

    For your initial post,
**complete both of the following tasks (#1 and #2)**:

    1.
**First**, in the lecture, I make some claims. I am genuinely trying to sort through some of these ethical issues along with you, therefore I welcome your critique and feedback.
    **Do either of the following:**

    · Option one: if you
**disagree** with one of the following claims I made, explain why:

    · The only way to maximize welfare is to respect freedom

    · The force of law cannot enforce goodness (promote virtue), only punish badness. Virtue must be promoted within smaller groups and institutions like churches, clubs, schools, families, and peer groups.

    · The force of law should only enforce obligations derived from "natural duties" and not "obligations of solidarity."

    · Option two: if you
**agree** with all of the claims I made above, tell how we ought to think about voluntary obligations. What are the relationships between voluntary obligations and the force of law, the respect of freedom, and the cultivation of virtue? Should the force of law enforce all or only some voluntary obligations? If it is only some obligations, how do we decide which voluntary obligations should be enforced by law? Note: I am asking whether the law should force us to undertake certain voluntary obligations, but should the law have a role in punishing people who break their voluntary obligations?

    2.
**Second**, regarding obligations of solidarity, there is one of two options. Defend which approach to obligations of solidarity seems correct:

    · Option one: obligations of solidarity don't actually exist. When we observe people performing actions of solidarity, we are observing their inherent bias. For example, a parent choosing to save their drowning child over another drowning child is a demonstration of the parent's bias in favor of their child, but the parent is not morally obligated to save their child over another child.

    · Option two: obligations of solidarity actually exist, and with belonging comes responsibility. Moral obligations can be imposed on us without our consent. For example, a parent is morally obligated to save their drowning child over another drowning child.
