  • Validity in Quantitative Research Designs

    Validity in Quantitative Research Designs

Validity in research refers to the extent researchers can be confident that the cause and effect they identify in their research are in fact causal relationships. If there is low validity in a study, it usually means that the research design is flawed and the results will be of little or no value. Four different aspects of validity should be considered when reviewing a research design: statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity. In this Discussion, you consider the importance of each of these aspects in judging the validity of quantitative research.

    To prepare:

Read the method section of one of the following quasi-experimental studies. Identify at least one potential concern that could be raised about the study’s internal validity. (May use Google Search for studies below).

    Metheny, N. A., Davis-Jackson, J., & Stewart, B. J. (2010). Effectiveness of an aspiration risk-reduction protocol.
    Nursing Research, 59
    (1), 18–25.

Padula, C. A., Hughes, C., & Baumhover, L. (2009). Impact of a nurse-driven mobility protocol on functional decline in hospitalized older adults.
Journal of Nursing Care Quality, 24
    (4), 325–331.

Yuan, S., Chou, M., Hwu, L., Chang, Y., Hsu, W., & Kuo, H. (2009). An intervention program to promote health-related physical fitness in nurses.
    Journal of Clinical Nursing, 18
    (10), 1,404–1,411.

Consider strategies that could be used to strengthen the study’s internal validity and how this would impact the three other types of validity.

Think about the consequences of an advanced practice nurse neglecting to consider the validity of a research study when reviewing the research for potential use in developing an evidence-based practice.

    Question:

    Post
the title of the study that you selected and your analysis of the potential concerns that could be raised about the study’s internal validity. Propose recommendations to strengthen the internal validity and assess the effect your changes could have with regard to the other three types of validity. Discuss the dangers of failing to consider the validity of a research study.

  • Nursing Policy Brief

Indicate who your audience is for the Policy Brief:

    of interest to ARNPs
that can be improved through a change in the policy..

What is the historical context of the issue?

What aspects of the issue remain problematic and why?

In what contexts does this issue exist? What is its scope?

    State the policy:
Identify 1–3 specific policy actions that will address the problem.

    Make your case:
Using as strong an argument as you can, with supporting evidence, describe the specific policy action(s) you suggest as the best solutions to this issue

    Discuss the Impact:
Briefly discuss the implications of taking your suggested policy action, as well as impact of inaction. Discuss pros and cons, consider unintended consequences that may occur and address limitations or potential opposing arguments

  • sharing and receiving patient information

You work for a health care organization that frequently needs to share information with other providers. Write an executive summary that examines the compliance procedures and practice guidelines that these organizations would need to establish to achieve optimum operational effectiveness while complying with federal, state, and local laws governing patient information security and records retention.

Analyze the current trends in patient data capture and information sharing among health care providers, assessing their impact on your organization’s operations.

  • Practicum Project Plan Guidelines

    NURS 6600: Capstone Synthesis Practicum

    Practicum Project Plan Guidelines

The Practicum Project Plan is a scholarly proposal for your project.

Project Planning Guidelines As you proceed with your Practicum Project planning, keep in mind that approximately half of your practicum hours may be spent on your Practicum Project. The development of the PPP does not count toward your practicum hours, and you may not begin to earn practicum hours for your project until your proposal is approved. Your actual Practicum Project must be completed on or before Day 5 of Week 11. Be sure to develop your plan accordingly. For instance, if you include any sort of data- gathering tool as a part of your project, you must receive IRB approval. Projects that require IRB approval, and this type of project therefore will be difficult to complete on time. If you desire to extend your project timeline, you may discuss this option with your Instructor. However, if you desire to complete your project on or before Day 5 of Week 11, your project should not include surveys, focus groups, collection of data, or any activities that require IRB approval. In addition, remember that your Practicum Project goal and objectives are distinct from the practicum professional development objectives you developed in Week 1.

Practicum Project Plan (PPP) This is the 4- to 6-page scholarly paper, referred to as your Practicum Project Plan (PPP), in which you will formulate findings, conclusions, and recommendations in relation to the problem or issue you are examining. Your paper will include the following: Title: The title should include the name of your project and should follow the Uniform- Guidelines format. Introduction: The introduction includes the purpose of the paper, the goal of the project, and the name of the project. It also outlines the structure of the paper. Goal statement: A goal statement identifies what you expect to accomplish, the focus area, and the population. It introduces the project and conveys, in broad terms, how you plan to solve a particular problem or issue. Project objectives: Project objectives delineate your strategy for reaching the goal and the steps you will follow to complete the project. You must include two or three measurable objectives that use Application-level or higher verbs from Bloom’s Taxonomy. Evidence-based review of the literature for project justification: This review provides evidence-based support for your identified problem, project methods, and evaluation (presented in Week 4). The literature should be directed toward justifying the project, not focus on potential solutions. You must include a review of your specialization’s professional-practice standards and guidelines related to your project and a minimum of five (5) scholarly references for this section of the paper. Methodology: This section addresses in detail how you will accomplish the project objectives. Include, as relevant, the who, when, where, and how of each objective. Resources: Identify and justify the human, physical, and/or technical resources you will need to complete this project. Note that for this assignment, you do not have to address the financial aspects of your plan. Formative evaluation: Describe how and when you will conduct formative evaluation of your project. Explain how you will use the evaluation results and how you will determine if the project is proceeding as planned. Summative evaluation: Describe how and when you will conduct summative evaluation of your project. Explain how you will use the evaluation results. Timeline: Create a graphic timeline representing significant stages of your project. Provide a narrative to help your Instructor understand the timeline. Include the timeline in an Appendix to your Practicum Project Plan. Note: You must use APA-style headings, but you are not required to title the headings as per the Practicum Project Plan Guidelines.
