Adolescents may feel many different emotions as they start to go through puberty. Because their bodies are starting to become more developed and their hormones may be changing, puberty can be a difficult time for the teen and their families. Not only that, but as teens start high school, bullying becomes one of the issues that some may have to deal with. There are many different things that can lead to depression in the adolescent’s life, so it is important to help them through the difficult time to prevent suicide. Suicide amongst teens is an ongoing problem that many families and friends of the individual may have to go through. It is the “3rd leading cause [of death] among those ages 15-24 years” (Jarvis, 2015). Some signs and symptoms that may be seen in those who are having suicidal thoughts are “prior suicide attempts, depression, hopelessness, firearms in the home, family history of suicide, family violence, self-mutilation, anorexia, verbal suicide messages, death themes in art, jokes, writing, behaviors, [and] saying goodbye (giving away prized possessions),” according to Jarvis (2015). It is important as nurses to assess for these behaviors and also perform the suicide assessment tool. Now according to the Institute for Work and Health (IWH) (2015), “primary prevention aims to prevent disease or injury before it ever occurs.” With suicide, this means that interventions should be performed to assess for the risk of suicide and to remove any harmful items within the individual’s environment. If something already happened, then secondary prevention would need to take place. To do this, the nurse may help with family and friends of the individual who committed suicide, to offer resources to the family and friends and help wherever. If the suicide hasn’t taken place, the nurse should continue to assess for suicidal thoughts and regularly screen them. Tertiary can be done with education of the population of teens and providing resources. In the Los Angeles (LA) County there are many hotlines that are available as resources for those debating on suicide. While the state of California offers the Suicide Prevention Resource Center. An organization is NAMI California. This organization “is a grassroots organization of families and individuals whose lives have been affected by serious mental illness” (NAMI, n.d.).

  • Influences of socioeconomic factors on health patterns and outcomes

Influences of socioeconomic factors on health patterns and outcomes

Obstacles to the chances to live a healthy life may be unjustly focused among certain populations, such as minorities, low-income populations and the less educated. The influences of socioeconomic factors on health patterns and outcomes are often intertwined and manifested in the result of health disparities. These influences also place people in certain populations at “risk” or “vulnerable” to health disparities. A at risk group tend to be those who are identified with common risk factors or exposure that presents as a threat to health. For example, the town I recently move to would be considered a high risk group for cardiovascular disease. A good portion of the society are overweight and hypertensive. Their diets are consumed with high fat, fried food and many of them are smokers. All populations have some risk, but risks for multiple illness conditions and premature death are much higher for specific populations (Maurer and Smith, 2013). However, not everyone in a high risk group will succumb to the risk.

    ORDER A CUSTOM-WRITTEN ESSAY

According to content.healthaffairs.org (2017) Vulnerability is “the susceptibility to harm, results from an interaction between the resources available to individuals and communities and the life challenges they face.”  A vulnerable population would be one that may not necessarily have a disease, but have social or personal conditions that lowers their ability to deal with a disease. They have difficulty accessing health care to address health concerns, and are more likely to experience poor outcome. For example, a person living below the poverty line and homeless is considered “vulnerable” if this person becomes ill he has no resources to buy medications or a place to recover once discharged from the hospital.

Explain why members of these groups cannot advocate for themselves or why advocating for these groups would be beneficial. What would you advocate for?

The people in these groups are unable to advocate for themselves because of many reasons. Some of these reasons are low economic resources, time and knowledge.  Typically, these groups have decrease knowledge in regards to options, treatments, and available resources or lack thereof. The community health nurse can advocate on their behalf by addressing organizations, governments, and community leaders concerning the issues and the needs of these groups. The nurse advocating for these groups is beneficial to society as a whole.  Advocacy can narrow the gap between fair treatments of these group in the health care setting and decrease health disparities. By doing so the nurse would strengthen the community as a whole. I would advocate for fair treatments amongst minorities and immigrants in the healthcare setting. I notice in these population groups treatments are not explained in full detail in comparison to other highly educated groups.  Patients sign consent without full understanding. I have notice lack of use in translation phones by doctors and nurses which would have help patients understand more.

  • Characteristics of an Effective Team Essay

Characteristics of an Effective Team Essay

As the saying goes, “There is no I in team.” There is another saying, “The whole world is a team.” These two sayings support the fact that everyone in healthcare organizations must work together for the good of patients. There is much in healthcare literature focusing on the role of high-performance teams and their impact on patient quality, patient safety, and healthcare worker satisfaction. One of the greatest “value-added” benefits of high-performance teams is the collaboration and sharing of essential information to enhance quality and patient outcomes. In modern healthcare organizations, effective teams are critical to providing patient and healthcare worker satisfaction. Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following: Describe at least three characteristics of an effective team. Identify two challenges with interprofessional healthcare teams with respect to the various roles. Describe one high-performing team in which you are currently engaged or have engaged in the past. What are the reasons for the success or failure of this team? Examine how education models created for interprofessional healthcare students may develop high-performing healthcare teams. • Role of the Nurse Executive Essay

Role of the Nurse Executive Essay

There are numerous definitions of what it means to be a nurse executive. The definition may change according to the work environment in your healthcare organization. Some literature refers to the nurse executive as a nurse administrator. The nurse executive must have knowledge, skills, and competencies that foster and promote nursing leadership within the healthcare organization. Nurse executives are in a key leadership role in healthcare organizations and have the capacity to effect positive change and promote a culture of community and excellence. Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following: Examine the role of the nurse executive in a clinical area with staff, patients, and providers. Explain why this role is important. Explain why the nurse executive needs to delegate. What are some of the challenges nurses face during delegation? Evaluate the role of the nurse executive in succession planning for the healthcare organization. Examine the educational preparation and national certification requirements for a nurse executive. • Adolescent Suicide Essay

    Comment on the following adolescent suicide essay post;

While it is a difficult and sensitive subject to discuss, adolescent suicide is a real issue that must be addressed. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 2015 suicide was the third leading cause of death among people between the ages of 10 and 14, and it was the second leading cause of death among those between the ages of 15 and 34. (CDC, 2017) Recognition of the signs and symptoms, as well as contributing factors, is an important part of preventing this from occurring. Some signs that may be noticeable include talking about dying, changes in normal behavior or personality, changes in sleep patterns including insomnia and nightmares, changes in appetite, or fear of losing control. (Kaslow, 2014) Risk factors for suicide include recent losses, drug or alcohol use, previous suicide attempts, a current mental health illness, feelings of hopelessness, helplessness, guilt, or even worthlessness. (Kaslow, 2014)

    ORDER A CUSTOM-WRITTEN ESSAY

When looking at primary means of preventing suicide, educating adolescents about the risk factors and building their resiliency to suicide is the goal to helping prevent this from occurring. (Caldwell, 2008) Secondary prevention involves early intervention once the risk factors have emerged to prevent suicidal actions. (Caldwell, 2008) This is a critical step in the process of assisting those struggling with these thoughts. Tertiary preventions are designed to keep these adolescents safe once any self-harming behaviors have started (Caldwell, 2008) which may include seeing Crisis Intervention or seeking treatment through inpatient or outpatient mental health services.

There are numerous resources available to assist anyone that is having suicidal ideation. A local service in my area is Crisis Intervention. There are people available to talk on the phone to coach and help those who are in need. People can even some into our local hospitals and they have staff who serve as Crisis Intervention specialists to meet with patients about their concerns. Another service that is available is the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline which “is a national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.” (National Suicide Prevention Lifeline, n.d.) There are many more services available for those in need and more education for the public on the services available is needed to help save lives.

As the nurse working with an adolescent that I suspected might be depressed, I would implement several interventions. First, I would do my best to build a therapeutic rapport with them to open the dialog for further assessment. I would have the discussion with them about their mental state and if they were feeling depressed or ever had suicidal thoughts. I would also discuss with them the stressors and resources that are available to assist them. I would also make sure the parents or guardian for the adolescent was understanding of the risk factors and signs of depression and suicidal ideation and when to seek help. I would encourage them to discuss these feeling with their primary care provider and make sure they were aware of the resources available to assist them as well as treatment options. As stated earlier, early intervention is essential for improved outcomes which would be my primary goal.

  • Return on Investment (ROI)

Return on investment (ROI) is a financial performance measure used to evaluate and determine the efficiency of an investment on a number of different measures. The ROI is calculated by examining the benefit (return) of an investment divided by the cost of the investment. The result of this calculation is a percentage or a ratio. For example, the formula for ROI is as follows: ROI = (Gain from the investment – Cost of the investment) / Cost of the investment It should be noted that there is more than one way healthcare organizations may compute and calculate the ROI for a new service or product line. The ROI is not always calculated in direct dollars, but it may be calculated as the ability to contribute to the organizational mission and philosophy. For example, a nonprofit healthcare organization may want to partner with a local community endeavor and establish a free clinic with low-dollar ROI but with a tremendous feeder of new patients to primary care services within the organization. Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following: Develop an ROI for a new project (such as the implementation of a new Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit [NICU]). Summarize the issues and challenges in formulating an accurate ROI for a new product or service line. Identify two major challenges and two major barriers for unit managers or the CNO accountable for ensuring ROI on a new product or service line. Comment on the postings of at least two peers. • Behavioral theories and public health

Part 1: Effectiveness of Behavioral Theories

Health education and health promotion programs focus on changing health behavior. Public health interventions are increasingly using theoretical frameworks to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation components to achieve behavior change and increase the health of the community.

From the assigned readings this week, review the following Web resource:

SOPHE Unintentional Injury and Violence Prevention. (n.d.).
Behavior change theories that can be applied to injury prevention and control.
    Retrieved from
    http://sophe.org/ui/behavioral-theories.shtml

Based on your research, select a behavior change theory and provide an example of how that theory applies to a health promotion program. Then, respond to the following:

Describe the effectiveness of behavioral theories in bringing about behavior change in a health promotion program.

In the example you cite, examine the factors that led to the decision to apply your chosen theory to the specific health promotion program.

Describe how the health promotion program was designed to incorporate the elements of this theory.

Support your statements with appropriate examples and scholarly references.

Part 2: Social Determinants Impacting Public Health

Social determinants of health have a significant impact on public health issues. They are the social, economic, and environmental conditions that are not distributed equally among populations. Those living in poverty and unsanitary living conditions are usually more susceptible to disease. Inaccessible healthcare systems and an unstable government without policies to address these disparities also contribute to the burden of disease.

From the assigned readings this week, review the following Web resource:

    World Health Organization (WHO). (2012).
    Social determinants of health

Evaluate the social determinants that may impact current public health issues within the U.S.

Select a current public health issue in the U.S. and describe the social determinant that impacts the issue.

Describe existing practices that are in place to improve economic or social determinants. What additional measures can you recommend?

In your opinion, analyze whether more can be done to address the issue. Include an analysis of whether policy creates interference.

  • The Average Daily Census (ADC) and the Target Budget

The Average Daily Census (ADC) and the Target Budget

One of the greatest challenges unit managers and CNOs face is predicting and working with the average daily census (ADC), particularly as it relates to the target budget. The average daily inpatient census refers to the number of patients present at the official census-taking time each day. For example, a patient admitted to the coronary care unit at 1:00 pm and who dies at 4:00 pm the same day is a patient admitted and discharged the same day. The ADC is typically calculated each night at midnight. It is a challenge to predict what the ADC will be on any given day. The target budget is targeted or predicted in the zero-based operating budget based on the previous years’ ADC. The target budget is typically projected at least one year in advance. A lot of information goes into the computation of a target budget, and there are many variances once the budget is formulated and approved. Using the readings for the week, the South University Online Library, and the Internet, respond to the following: Explain how the ADC contributes to the target budget. Describe two major challenges in determining the actual target budget and ADC. Identify two major challenges for unit managers and CNOs due to the variances between the actual target budget and the ADC. Comment on the postings of at least two peers.
