    Hello,

The organization I chose is the one I work at as well, Even though for me I have had great experiences as an employee and have really grown in my career. From a Moral standpoint, there are instances where I think our facility and organization could do better in the respects to our staff and clients we serve. In regards to the staff, we have client support staff, which are positions that do not require a college degree. These positons are essential in the productivity in the organization and providing ongoing client care. With that note, they are also the least paid positions and the staff, most of whom are adults with families aren’t paid a livable wage in todays world. We are able to retain staff to a point as a lot of them are in recovery and want to “give back” in a sense with working with our high risk population. The barrier that is faced is that in PA, our minimum wage is still $7.25 and because we start rate at $12.50 the overall organization will not budge on raising the base pay to a more livable wage, regardless of how much we push at the facility level. This causes a lot of strain with engagement and hiring practices, as we are not marketable or competitive, we usually don’t attract good quality staff (we have a good handful). Its hard as a member of leadership, that has been a part of the battle to raise wages to a more liveable wage for these support staff departments, that they tend to have to work multiple jobs, can’t afford insurance, childcare, and basic necessities.

Werhane moral imagination can be applied to break through the tunnel vision of the situation to be able to assess and present plausible solutions that could be beneficial in the long run for not only the employees but also the organization, at the facility level. Werhane (2008) stated that one can be trapped in the organizational culture that prevent creative thinking and can essentially prevent vision and opportunity. In regards to the low base pay for support staff, we can utilize moral imagination to explore the long term benefits as well as the short term risks and potential financial loss, that would eventually even out. Werhane (2008) stated that moral imagination is the ability to discover and act upon possibilities outside the framed set of rules. Inititaing by forcing self relfection upon the organization and the upper management to occur. Framing the situation at hand in a manner that would allow them the opportunity to envision how one would live on the wages we are providing, bringing in factual information regarding housing and other living expenses, and discuss how they can be creative to live on that wage. We would then present the financial numbers on how if raised to a base standard that is considered “competitive” in the local area to not only, provide ease of financial stress and burden, but also elevate the potential of attracting better quality of staff. Providing opportunity for the members of management to further imagine what changes could occur with more prominent and motivated staff on site levels. How that can essentially boost a desire to work, and provide quality service, and aid in reducing negative feedback and experiences. We are an organization and business providing rehabilitation services hundreds of men and women at a time, they are the main stakeholder that we should be focusing on. We must be creative, as we can focus on all the program changes and enhancements as we want, but if the staff that are working directly with them 24 hours a day aren’t able to reduce their own stress outside of work, or have to work 100 or more hours a week in order to make a living, we would see improvement in moral overall. Then taking that bit of information to further expand the imagination and as well as data, increasing the base pay would provide benefits culturally, morally, and in a business perspective, they would see a balance begin to occur as they essentially would see a decrease in OT pay as there would be no need for staff to work over 100 hours as we would then be able to retain more staff and not need to fill deficits in staffing.

**_Synthesis: Employing Moral Imagination at Bank of America to Drive Positive Social Change_**

    **Organizational Overview and Ethical Concern**

Bank of America (BoA) stands as a global leader in the financial services sector, delivering a wide array of banking, investment, asset management, and risk management services to individual consumers, businesses, and institutions. Despite its commitment to corporate social responsibility, BoA has faced persistent ethical criticism—most notably, regarding its role in perpetuating financial inequity in underserved communities.

A pressing concern lies in the institution’s history of closing branches in low-income and minority neighborhoods while maintaining a robust presence in more affluent areas (Baradaran, 2015). These actions contribute to systemic financial exclusion, which exacerbates economic disparities and undermines community development. Addressing this issue requires a shift from traditional business thinking to a framework that prioritizes ethical reflection and innovative solutions—an opportunity well suited for moral imagination.

    **Applying Werhane’s Moral Imagination Framework**

Patricia Werhane’s concept of moral imagination offers a powerful lens for ethical decision-making in business. It involves the ability to transcend entrenched assumptions, envision alternative possibilities, and creatively reframe challenges to generate ethical and innovative solutions (Werhane, 1999). This framework encourages organizations to consider their broader societal responsibilities and explore new ways of operating that align business success with social good.

**In applying Werhane’s model, Bank of America can take the following actions:**

    1. Reframe Existing Assumptions: Instead of perceiving the closure of branches in marginalized communities as merely a cost-saving measure, BoA could recognize these decisions as missed opportunities for long-term investment in community growth and customer loyalty.

    2. Empathize and Innovate: Through moral imagination, BoA can place itself in the position of underserved populations, better understanding the structural barriers they face. This empathetic approach could inspire innovative solutions such as mobile banking services, digital access initiatives, or strategic partnerships with local organizations.

    3. Create Inclusive Business Models: Moving beyond profit-centered models, BoA could implement hybrid strategies that merge financial performance with social impact. For instance, initiatives that combine financial literacy programs with affordable microloans could empower individuals and foster economic resilience, while also expanding BoA’s reach in underserved markets.

By adopting this morally imaginative approach, BoA would not only address the root causes of financial exclusion but also enhance its role as a catalyst for community empowerment and equitable development. Such efforts align with the broader view that corporations have a responsibility to create shared value for all stakeholders—not just shareholders (Freeman, Harrison, & Wicks, 2007).

Bank of America’s scale and influence position it uniquely to lead by example in integrating moral imagination into its corporate ethos. By rethinking how it serves marginalized communities and adopting ethically driven, innovative practices, BoA can contribute meaningfully to reducing financial inequality. Ultimately, this approach fosters sustainable success and affirms the institution’s commitment to advancing social justice through financial empowerment.

    ch.13 attached
    ch 14 attached
Family units are the most basic units of society. In the families in which we are raised, we learn the rules of society and our place in it. And in a patriarchal society, according to bell hooks and other feminists, if we're not diligent about challenging the messages about hierarchy and dominance that we absorb from the culture–families can be places where we _perpetuate_ those hierarchies and dominant behaviors (and teach them to our children to perpetuate further!). In Chapter 13, hooks diligently points out that because women still perform the majority of child care work in heterosexual couples, women, more often than men, are those who perpetuate patriarchal dominance behaviors by teaching them to their children.
The reading by Kang et al points out that the **nuclear family**, or North America's version of this, the SNAF (Standard North American Family), is treated as the norm–perhaps even the _ideal_ in our culture. In case you're unfamiliar with the term, "nuclear family" refers to a family unit that consists of mom, dad, and some kids. Notice how **heteronormative** it is; same-sex couples are excluded from this ideal. And what about single-parent families? Families with no children? Families with more than two adult family members and multiple generations living under one roof? Why does our culture consider this type of family the "norm" or perhaps even an ideal that many of us grow up to strive for?
Consider the history of marriage in the U.S.. Reach way back to first wave feminism. Remember when women were fighting just to gain basic citizenship rights–to be seen as people in the eyes of the law? Before the advancements made by first-wave feminists, women in the West were essentially the property of their fathers before becoming property of their husbands. To this day, it's still common for fathers to "give away" their daughters at their weddings. How can someone "give" something (/someone) unless he owns it? Consider, also, the tradition of brides wearing white at their weddings–a symbol of purity, of the promise that the woman's virginity is something whose ownership is passed from father to husband.
In the reading by Kang et al, the authors argue that this tradition of marriage was specific to white, middle class women. While this is largely true, they are simplifying this history, which is, of course, much more complex. For example, many cultures throughout the world favor a family structure in which women are primarily relegated to private sphere of the home, and many of these cultural practices are brought to the U.S. via immigration. It's important not to leave this out this factor in discussing the roots of **gender expectations** within families.
Optional: For a larger perspective and a look further back into history, watch the video below about the history of marriage:
    https://youtu.be/ZZZ6QB5TSfk
So, _the institution of marriage has a long history in which marriage hasn't always had women's best interests in mind._
Even now, _in a heterosexual couple, the man and the woman are not experiencing the relationship in the same way as their partner._ For one, even though circumstances of modern life require that both partners work outside the home in most couples, women still come home and do the vast majority of the childcare and housework. This is sometimes called the **second shift**, because it's like a second, unpaid job that most women perform when they come home from their paid job. The fact that women often do this unpaid labor comes from a history of white femininity as a standard for "womanhood," as you read in the chapter by Kang et al. This is called a **gendered division of labor.** This gender divide can contribute to perpetuating **separate spheres**, or the idea that men "should" inhabit the public sphere outside the home and women "should" inhabit the private sphere within the home.
Watch this video in which Arlie Hochschild, the woman who coined the term "second shift," explains this concept further:
    https://youtu.be/mvzE6zYkEQY
Unless couples make a conscious choice to split housework and become equal partners, usually women default to doing most of this unpaid work.
This is mostly due to socialization, but it's also due to the fact that men tend to earn more–remember that **gender pay gap** you hear about so often? And because our culture tends to repeat hierarchical structures, _even in same-sex couples, the person who earns less tends to do most of the unpaid work._
In their textbook, _Gendered Voices, Feminist Visions_, Shaw and Lee describe three marriage models that sum up the **power structures within marriage models/marriage and partnership.** They describe three models, the traditional **"head-complement"** (one breadwinner and one who stays at home and offers support–childcare, housework, and emotional support), the **"junior partner-senior partner model"** (both partners work, but the one who earns more tends to have more power, and their job is considered more important; if one person has to miss work or even quit work for family obligations, it is usually the junior partner, who is usually the woman in hetero couples; the junior partner usually does more housework, regardless of how many hours they work. This is the most common marriage model at present.), and the **"equal partners"** model (both partners agree to share housework equally and value both of their jobs equally, regardless of each partner's income). [You can read more about this hereLinks to an external site.](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dKVVovFH2EBAiiRb_J2Weftjwxe3ogV1/view?usp=sharing). Consider what would happen to these couples in the case of divorce. In the head-complement and junior partner-senior partner couples, the "complement" and "junior partner" usually struggle financially after divorce; they haven't been able to build their career in the same way as their partners. This can create a dynamic of dependence and control within the marriage/romantic partnership.
These readings cover a lot, so I'll give you a few options for how to respond. Please respond with at least 200 words **.** Choose **one** of the options below:
    1. Consider the structure of your own family. Who does most of the unpaid work at home? Is there a gendered division of labor within your household? Is there a division based on income? What do you think about this? Connect your experience to one of the readings.
    – A note: Just because a person of one gender does certain chores and a person of another gender does other chores does not alone make this a gendered division of labor. A gendered division of labor refers to when individuals are _required_ or _expected_ to perform certain tasks _because of_ their gender. For example, for a period of time in my past, I was living with a (male) partner who was working and I was not; I did most of the housework for that time, because I wasn't employed and I had time; if he'd been unemployed while I was working, _he_ would have done most of the housework. This is _not_ a gendered division of labor. When I was a child, I washed the dishes and my brother mowed the lawn because my parents thought that girls should do housework and boys should do yard work. This _is_ an example of a gendered division of labor.
    2. Comment on hooks's discussion of marriage and partnership in Chapter 14. Include a quote from hooks to make it clear what you're commenting on.
    3. If you have children: Are you attempting to engage in feminist parenting, as discussed by hooks? (If the answer is no, choose a different question to answer for this assignment.) Explain what that looks like in your family, and connect your discussion with a quote from chapter 13 of _Feminism is for Everybody._ You may want to refer to other course materials as well.
    4. If you plan to have children in the future: How will you engage in feminist parenting? (If you don't plan to do this, choose a different question to answer for this assignment.) Explain, and connect your discussion with a quote from chapter 13 of _Feminism is for Everybody._ You may want to refer to other course materials as well.
    5. Choose a key idea from the chapter from Kang et al and comment on it. For example, the concepts chosen families, separate spheres, or the cult of domesticity. Include a quote from the reading in your discussion.

This continuation of the ideas presented in the Family , as it's clear that, for many women, home continues to be a workplace–even for those who work full-time outside the home, and often even when they are the primary earner in the home.
When they do work outside the home, women still face a **gender wage gap**. According to the most recent data from the [Pew Research CenterLinks to an external site.](https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2023/03/01/the-enduring-grip-of-the-gender-pay-gap/ "Link") (2022) women, on average, earn 82 cents for every dollar earned by a man (an improvement from the 77 cents that both hooks and Kang et al wrote about). When we look through our intersectional lens, we can see that this number is incomplete, however, because while white women earn 83 cents for every dollar a white man makes, Black women earn only 70 cents, Hispanic women earn just 65 cents, and Asian women earn 93 cents. This, despite the fact that more women than men have attended and graduated from college for about 20 years!
Chapter 9 of _Feminism is for Everybody_ should clarify for you why hooks seems critical of a reformist feminist emphasis on workplace equality. She argues that the second wave feminist emphasis on work as the key to women's liberation lacked an intersectional focus–because poor and working class have always had to work outside the home, among other reasons. This focus on work made it difficult for women to unit across social classes, and I would argue that it led to disillusionment many young women feel toward work, as discussed by Scaringi.
This argument seems more relevant now than ever, as evidenced by Scaringi's discussion of "soft girls" and "trad wives." Work can be liberating for everyone only when it allows for everyone to have their basic needs met, _and_ offers personal fulfillment.
