Rules for Discussion – RTI and EBP

Each student is to make a minimum of 2 substantive posts and 2 replies.  Canvas often groups posts and I will respond to posts of the same topic. So, I may not be able to respond to each and every post, but I will group my responses to make sure to address the topics presented. Discussions cannot be made up or substituted with another assignment.

This assignment will use the Assignment Rubric displayed earlier. Your original posts and responses are to be reflective of the current literature, clearly state your position and be brief but thorough. Your responses should also be respectful of the person whose post you are responding to. In this discussion, you will present two effective RTI and/or EBP strategies. You can do 2 of EBP or RTI or 2 of either one of the topics.  Your discussion should reflect best practice as found in the literature and not just a personal preference. Your posts do not have to be long but complete enough that others can understand the intervention or strategy and how it is used. Do not hesitate to reach out to me for assistance.

RTI and EBP cover a lot of territory. Obviously, you could not cover the entire area of responses in these topics so focus your posts on a specific element(s) of RTI or EBP such as the state of the literature in these topics, issues and problems with some element of RTI or EBP or issues with implementation of RTI or EBP. Please free to focus on any elements of EBP or RtI that you find interesting.

    **General Rubric For All Assignments**

This rubric will be used in evaluating the quality of your discussion contributions and written assignments. Numeric values are not assigned to the categories as they change according to the value of the assignment. I want to see well thought out and referenced ideas, not opinion based on experience. Experience is a wonderful thing, but in this course, we will stick to researched facts from your text and peer-reviewed articles.

    **100 Points**

**Answer each question without writing in the form of a paragraph. The topic to respond in (part 1, question A) will be** reducing task refusal behavior in a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with ASD who attends a daycare center and is enrolled in VPK using the Premack Principle and high-p probability as intervention. In (part 1, question B), the article related to the topic will be the one that is in the instructions and must be (cited the article in APA format in the project). In (part 2, question c), the design that will be used is a Multielement design 2-phase with an initial baseline (just justified, do not create graph).

In this section, you will now consider a research study you would be interested in conducting – especially if you wish to take EDF 6944 Advanced Single Case Design. Considering all of material from this course, please answer the following prompts that would be in your introduction and methods section.

    ### Introduction Part 1

    a) Topic: Briefly describe your topic of interest and why it is important. Importance should be related to previous research in the field and need to assess the intervention. (5 points)

    b) Literature Review: Locate an article related to your topic of interest. Indicate how it is related to your topic of interest. Be sure to cite it in APA style. (5 points)

    c) Research Question: Create a research question based on the topic. Remember to include all of the components of a good research question. (10 points)

    d) Independent Variable: Identify the intervention or treatment package. (5 points)

    e) Dependent Variable: Identify the target behavior(s). (5 points)

    ### Method Part 2

    a) Participant(s): Describe the population and justify why they were selected for your study. (5 points)

    b) Measurement Procedure: Identify how you will capture the dependent variable and include whether the measurement you selected is continuous or discontinuous. (10 points)

    c) Design: Select one of the single-case designs you learned about and justify the reason for selection. (10 points)

    d) Measurement Integrity: Based on your measurement procedure and design, indicate which IOA procedure you will use. (10 points)

    e) Procedural Integrity: Describe how you will account for treatment integrity. (5 points)

    ### Method Part 3

    f) Maintenance and Generalization: Describe considerations for maintenance and generalization. (10 Points)

    g) Social Validity: Defend how your study has social validity (5 points)

    h) Ethical Considerations: Identify any ethical considerations in your research, such as consent, assent, conflicts of interest, etc. (5 points)

    i) General: Indicate where your visual display of data be located in a scientific paper. (5 points)

    j) General: Indicate where you would place the implications of your results in a scientific paper? (5 points)

    ## Project Overview

    200 points

The purpose of the final project is to assess your ability to apply the concepts of your coursework to activities related to measurement and single case design. You are given several weeks to work on the project. While the current course may not have covered all of the material at this time, you should begin looking over the sections and begin answering questions related to the content you have been exposed to. That being said, it is also important not to wait until the last week to begin working on the project. The final section of the project should consider your area of interest – especially if you want to move on to Advanced Single Case Design, where you will create a real proposal with an introduction and methods section.

    1. Read the following passage from Lora and Kisamore (2019)
    **:**

_The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of errorless teaching, prompt delay, reinforcement, and multiple exemplar training on the acquisition, generalization, maintenance, and independent use of a problem‐solving strategy that involved a textual/pictorial activity schedule with four adolescents with ASD._

    Answer the following questions:

    a) What is/are the independent variable(s) (2 points)?

    b) What is/are the dependent variable(s) (2 points)?

    c) Who are the participants (1 point)?

    2. Write a demonstration research question (5 points).

    3. Write a parametric research question (5 points).

    ## Reliability

    **20 points**

    4. You are asked to take IOA on some
[recorded video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNWIhaQks74) of dogs barking. The BCBA tells you to “
**_Count the barks_**” You are Observer 2 in the table below. First, watch the video and enter your observations in the table.

    | | | | |
    | — | — | — | — |
    | | Observer 1 | Observer 2 | Total Count IOA |

    | Dog 4 (Spaniel) | 42 | | |
    | Dog 5 (Shihtzu) | 40 | | |
    | Dog 6 (Doberman) | 23 | | |

    a) Calculate
**Total Count IOA** for each dog and add to the table above. (5 points)

    b) Did any of the (6) observations meet criteria for the conventional criteria for acceptable agreement (as defined by the Cooper et al. text)? Explain. (5 points)

    c) Did you notice anything difficult about obtaining the count? What would you suggest be improved to rectify this situation? (5 points)

    d) Now we are going to use the same data from above, but pretend that instead of dogs barking, you and Observer 1 calculated interval data. Place your same data from your Observer 2 column and enter the same percentages in the 4th column in the second table below.

    | | | | |
    | — | — | — | — |
    | | Observer 1 | Observer 2 | IOA per interval |
    | Interval 1 | 27 | | |

    ## Project Overview

    200 points

The purpose of the final project is to assess your ability to apply the concepts of your coursework to activities related to measurement and single case design. You are given several weeks to work on the project. While the current course may not have covered all of the material at this time, you should begin looking over the sections and begin answering questions related to the content you have been exposed to. That being said, it is also important not to wait until the last week to begin working on the project. The final section of the project should consider your area of interest – especially if you want to move on to Advanced Single Case Design, where you will create a real proposal with an introduction and methods section.

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

    ## **Instructions**
    Complete the following:
A recent cyber-attack occurred where a botnet-type attack targeted a major US defense firm. No physical damage occurred to the firm's network, but significant technological secrets about a new surveillance and targeting system from the firm, Defense Applications International (DAI), may have been compromised. Incidental, but nonetheless because of the attack, the virus also infected a software program that DAI was testing at an electrical plant in Ohio. The plant was shut down for 12 hours while repairs were made. The NSA believes it has credible evidence that the attack had a direct connection to the elite cyber unit Department 2112, of the country of Redistan, an adversary of the United States, although the attack itself appears to include private citizens of Redistan. The attack, however, was routed through several third countries including Bluelandia, an ally of the United States.
You are a cyber desk officer working for the National Security Council. The Deputy National Security Advisor has asked you to write a memorandum addressing key issues of cyber policy. In the memorandum, you must address the following issues:
    1) Based on the facts we know, should the attack be considered a crime, espionage or act of war? What should the US response be? How can the US best defend itself from future attacks such as the one that just occurred?
    2) Should the United States assign US Cyber Command (USCYBERCOM) with the responsibility of protecting certain private companies, and, if so, what should the general standard be for determining what companies the government should be responsible for defending?
    3) Should the United States lead the effort at an international cyber agreement? Why or why not? What challenges would the President face in trying to get an agreement? Are there any alternatives?
    4) Are there any substantive changes that should be made to the current US cyber policy?
Note: In creating your memorandum, you may allocate the content according to the importance of the issue. For example, you can allocate several pages to one issue if you believe it deserves more attention than the others do; however, ensure that each question specified by the Deputy National Security Advisor is addressed. This may be challenging, but if you have read and understood the course material, it will be a straightforward assignment.
    **Technical Requirements**
    – Your paper must be a minimum of 10-12 pages (the Title and Reference pages do not count towards the minimum limit).
    – Scholarly and credible references should be used. A minimum of 6-8 scholarly sources are required for this assignment.
    – Type in Times New Roman, 12 point and double space.
    – Students will follow the current Turabian Style as the sole citation and reference style used in written work submitted as part of coursework.
    – Points will be deducted for the use of Wikipedia or encyclopedic-type sources. It is highly advised to utilize books, peer-reviewed journals, articles, archived documents, etc.
    – All submissions will be graded using the assignment rubric.

In this final section of your paper, the research process is concluded. You should provide a summary of your research based on the Research Questions or Hypothesis, Problem Statement, Purpose, Significance (those items noted in the Introduction section), and how you will address the items in the Introduction section with the selected Research Design (Methodology). It is in this section of the paper that the contributions to knowledge, in the realm of theory, are fully developed and described. This section also contains a discussion of the limitations of the analysis and suggestions for future research.
    **References:**
Provide the final "full-list" of references used for the entire paper. They should be in APA 6th Edition format. If you have a citation in the body of your work, you must provide the appropriate reference in the Reference section. **Research Designs**

    **Introduction**

Selecting an adequate research design is necessary for answering clinical questions effectively and for getting valid and applicable results (Creswell& Creswell, 2023). The research selected designs, such as quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods, will influence the means of data gathering, analyzing, and interpreting. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of a telephone nurse follow-up at 72 hours after discharge from the VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Unit on the compliance of veteran patients' preparedness during TBI. More specifically, the study will determine the impact of nurse-initiated early calls on patients' knowledge of discharge instructions, self-management, and subsequent physician-related health services utilization, like Emergency department and hospital readmission. Improved knowledge of these relationships could help to improve TBI-related discharge planning and health outcomes among the nation's veterans.

    **Research Questions**

The following research questions will be used to assess the impact of the early nurse-led interventions on patient preparedness and post-discharge outcomes. This study's questions are designed to provide comprehensive insight into the effect of early nurse-led follow-up strategies:

    · How does a phone call from the nurse within 72 hours of discharge from the VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Unit influence veterans with TBI readiness?

    · How does the timing of telephone follow-up by nurses affect veterans’ understanding of discharge instructions and their ability to manage TBI-related symptoms?

    · What effect does a nurse follow-up at 72 hours post-discharge have for reducing readmission or ER visits in veterans with TBI?

    **Basic Research Designs**

Quantitative research methodologies, including experimental, quasi-experimental, and correlational studies, are prevalent in the field of healthcare research. A significant amount of health care research is quantitative in nature, from true experiments to quasi-experiments and correlation studies. Causal relationships can be made by having a random assignment of participants to intervention and control groups in experimental research designs. Treatment is evaluated using quasi-experimental designs when randomization is not feasible or ethical due to the fact that researchers examine already-existing groups/people or conditions (Polit & Beck, 2021). Some relationship between a factor and an outcome is to be detected by correlational studies, while the patterns of response are to be used for prediction. Standard quantitative research is good at assessing particular effects, such as readmission rates and the effectiveness of symptom management.

The purpose of qualitative research is to generate rich knowledge about how participants perceive and experience particular issues. Ethnographic studies focus on a cultural group, exploring their actions, interactions, rituals, and interpretations over time using participant observation and interviews. Phenomenological research aims to describe the lived experiences of individuals from the perspective of research participants, in which the goal is to achieve an understanding of the subjective realities of the participants (Polit & Beck, 2021). Grounded theory, as a research method, forms inductive theory concepts from case studies via the identification of patterns of situations and activities in the social situation. The qualitative research methods are best designed for discovering in-depth contextual information about patient readiness and their understanding of discharge orders and discharge experiences.

The complementarity of quantitative and qualitative methods in mixed methods research adds value to understanding the phenomenon. The research is using a combination of both sequential and concurrent designs to produce generalizable findings from the quantitative data, as qualitative data will offer contextual insights (Creswell & Creswell, 2023). Quantitative findings will be presented first, followed by the qualitative interview data, and then, to extend the findings within-subjects design. The parallel study simultaneously acquires both types of data to confirm or contribute to the findings of the study. Mixed methods are well-suited for investigating complex healthcare problems where statistical findings are supplemented by rich qualitative reports to help improve clinical practice.

Comparison of these methods indicates their strengths and weaknesses. Many times, quantitative research provides explicit information that helps make decisions; however, there may not be the depth of individual experience. On the other hand, qualitative methodologies provide rich insights into the lived experiences of participants but are less generalizable to wider populations. Mixed methods research strikes the balance between these strengths by integrating statistical analysis with personal stories, so that what we have is a more complete picture. For this study focused on nurse-led telephone follow-up for TBI veterans, using a mixed methods design is appropriate as it captures measurable outcomes (readmission rates, etc.) and a detailed understanding of the veterans' experience and perceptions.

    **Additional Research Questions**

Secondary research questions, in addition to their primary research questions, may be helpful to clarify comprehension. It would be informative to also consider feelings of satisfaction and comfort for veterans associated with nurse-led follow-up calls and how this may influence patient adherence to the recommended plan of care. Examining the frequency and duration of nurse-initiated calls that are associated with ideal readiness could also reveal useful results. It would also be useful to understand any barriers that nurses face when conducting these follow-up discussions and how these may affect their effectiveness. Finally, identifying which components of discharge instructions are most frequently misunderstood or challenging for veterans might inform education strategies at discharge. Answering these supplementary questions may strengthen intervention approaches and enhance patient preparedness and ultimate outcome.

    **Analytical Methods**

For my week 5 assignment, I decided to do a quantitative article that documented the effect of a nurse-led telephone follow-up within 72 hours of discharge from the VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Unit to determine the impact of the intervention on veterans’ readiness. Quantitative research uses rigorous, controlled, predefined procedural manipulations and statistical analysis to describe and generalize the data gathered through quantitative measures. The above approach offers the advantage of providing measurable results and valid inferences based on statistical evidence. Utilizing surveys/structured questionnaires, the strategy will allow an accurate assessment of veterans’ understanding of their discharge instructions, level of readiness, and motivation to engage with healthcare. The organized process of quantitative research enables a comprehensive analysis of data and increases the reliability and validity of results (Polit & Beck, 2021).

The collected data will be analyzed using a t-test and regression analysis, and descriptive statistics will come into play for data analysis. Descriptive statistics will summarize fundamental characteristics of the sample, attitudes of veterans, and key trends. Effectiveness of nurse-initiated follow-up calls for the subgroups will be examined with t-test inferential statistics to determine the significant differences in readiness and readmission. Second, regression analysis can help to reveal predictive relationships and input variables that contribute significantly to forecasting patient outcomes at discharge. These two analytic methods will provide a clearer and precise conclusion on the results obtained from the quantitative analysis (Plichta & Kelvin, 2020).

The importance of these analytic approaches is their potential to provide robust evidence-based findings. The inclusion of descriptive and inferential statistics assists in the analysis and testing of the data properly and in evaluating the ability of interventions to be effective. This kind of statistical design minimizes bias, and therefore, the results can be generalized. Statistical sign analysis identifies variables that affect patient readiness and usage of health care and guides clinical decision making. The application of these analytic approaches enhances the internal validity of the study's parameter estimates and represents actionable knowledge to enhance the quality of care for veterans.

    **Conclusion**

In conclusion, using a quantitative research design for the study will facilitate the assessment of the effects of the nurse-led telephone follow-up intervention. The application of multiple statistical methods, such as descriptive statistics, t-test, and the regression adopted by this paper, will also achieve relatively stable and objective results. These methods progress the recognition of the distinct relationships of nursing interventions and enhance veteran readiness and health care utilization. Knowledge of these relationships is important for developing discharge protocols aimed at decreasing hospital readmission in veterans with TBI. The competencies for quantitative advocacy in evidence-based practice raise the bar to ensure the highest standard of care to achieve the best patient outcomes for this vulnerable population.

The supervisory relationship is one of the most critical connections in the career of a behavior analyst. Cultivating and growing these relationships is often et of skills that supervisors take for granted; however, research has indicated the importance of positive supervisory relationships repeatedly. In this lesson, strategies for creating effective relationships with supervisees/trainees are shared, including developing positive rapport, embracing culture in the supervisory process, and delivering high-quality, functional feedback to enhance performance. With the understanding that we often will end up in disagreements with supervisees/trainees (or be responsible for moderating disagreements between employees), this course will also provide strategies to prevent conflicts in organizations, and a process for handling them when conflict inevitably occurs.
