    **## WEEK9DISCUSSION3.ETHICALCONSIDERATIONSINI.OPSYCHOLOGY.docx**

Week 9 Discussion. 3 Ethical Considerations in I/O Psychology

Consider the following ethical dilemma: The CEO asks you to assess the job satisfaction of employees. Therefore, you send employees an electronic survey, with a statement confirming that individual results will be kept confidential. Upon reviewing the results, you see that several female employees have provided qualitative comments about sexual harassment they endured at the hands of the CEO. What would you do? Would you break confidentiality and inform the Director of Human Resources? Would you confront the CEO directly? Or would you do nothing to maintain confidentiality?

In this Discussion, you consider ethical dilemmas related to I/O psychology and apply ethical standards and guidelines to resolve the dilemmas.

    To Prepare:

    · Read Chapter 2 in
_The SAGE Handbook_ and view the media resource, “Ethical Decision-Making.” Review the ethical dilemmas and relevant ethical standards and guidelines that apply.

    · Read the
    _Ethical Principles of Psychologists_ and
_Code of Conduct_. Consider ethical standards that apply to the practice of I/O psychology.

    · Identify an ethical dilemma that an I/O psychology practitioner might encounter and the ethical standards that you would apply to address the dilemma.

Week 9 assignment. Legal Considerations in I/O Psychology

In 2017, a pregnant Walmart employee who worked as a packer at a distribution center was struggling with morning sickness and asked for a break from some of her duties. Her supervisor responded that she would need a doctor’s note. Consequently, the woman obtained a note from her doctor that said she was to avoid heavy lifting and gave it to her supervisor. In turn, her supervisor referred her to Human Resources. A Human Resources employee informed her that she could not return to work until after she gave birth because she was a “liability,” and that she would have to apply for unpaid leave to keep her job. Did Walmart discriminate against this employee?

In the United States, there are many anti-discrimination laws; yet, as the Walmart example shows, discrimination continues to be a problem in the workplace. For this Assignment, you will examine the role of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in enforcing anti-discrimination laws. You will also consider what steps you would take to ensure equity in the workplace as an I/O psychology practitioner.

    To Prepare:

    · Read Chapter 3 in the Aamodt text,
_Industrial/Organizational Psychology: An Applied Approach_, and “Title VII” of
_The Civil Rights Act of 1964_.

    · Identify unlawful employment practices and anti-discrimination laws.

    · Consider the role of the EEOC in addressing unlawful employment practices.

    · Think about the best practices you would apply as an I/O psychology practitioner to prevent discrimination and ensure equity in the workplace.

    · Describe the role of the EEOC in the practice of I/O psychology and three different laws that are enforced by the EEOC.

    · Describe two different types of discrimination prohibited by the laws enforced by EEOC and at least three best practices you would suggest for ensuring equity in the workplace.

    · Suppose you find yourself in an elevator with the CEO of a Fortune 500 company that you admire greatly. You strike up a casual conversation that suddenly turns to the topic of discrimination in the workplace, and you quickly realize that the CEO has no understanding of I/O psychology or I/O psychologists’ roles in addressing these concerns. One day you hope to begin your I/O career at this company or one similar to it. Therefore, you decide to give a quick elevator speech on I/O psychology and its role in best practices to address discrimination and inequity in the workplace. What would you say?

    **## WEEK9ASSIGNMENT.LEGALCONSIDERATIONSINI.OPSYCHOLOGY.docx**

    Assessment Description

The foundation of many states’ science standards is built on the three dimensions of science learning including core ideas, crosscutting concepts, and science and engineering practices. Each dimension works together to support students in building a deeper understanding of science concepts and real-world applications of those concepts. The three dimensions allow students to learn how to think and act like scientists and engineers, while also actively engaging them in science. When teaching science, it is important to engage students with hands-on activities for them to best understand the concepts being taught.

    **Part 1: GoReact Presentation**

Create a 12-15 slide digital professional development presentation for new teachers to train them on the foundations of science instruction. You will narrate your presentation through GoReact by using the screen share function. You must have your camera on during the narrated presentation. Include the following in your presentation:

    · Explain the three dimensions of science learning, including discussion on the scientific and engineering practices, the crosscutting concepts, and the disciplinary core ideas.

    · Describe the purpose of three-dimensional learning in science instruction.

    · Explain how using phenomena and inquiry-based learning supports science instruction, science standards, and the three dimensions of science learning.

    · Provide 2-3 best practices in science instruction and an example of how each practice could support three-dimensional learning in science instruction and critical questioning skills.

    · Explain how educators can incorporate cross-curricular content into science instruction.

    · Discuss how technology enhances science instruction. Provide at least two examples of technological tools that can be used as an integral part of science instruction and one example of how teachers can collaborate and co-learn with students to discover and use new digital resources and tools during science instruction.

There are two ways to access GoReact for this assignment. When accessing it through the calendar view, select the “Open Assignment” button to begin work. When accessing it through the Topic content, select the “Go to Assessment” button to begin work.

You must have your camera on during the entire video. Remember, video and audio quality are important and should be taken into consideration. Ensure your video is filmed with sufficient lighting and the volume is adequate for viewers to hear. Intonation, expression, proper speech, and professional attire are expected.

    **Part 2: Reflection**

Once you post your narrated presentation, you will see it on the GoReact dashboard. Enter the playback screen by clicking the thumbnail. Watch the video and make at least
**_two specific comments_** by bookmarking and making a comment explaining where you see the following:

    · Biggest strength of your presentation and delivery

    · A place where you could improve your presentation and delivery to help you grow as a future educator

Presentation must include a title slide at the beginning and a reference slide with documentation of resources at the end. The title slide and reference slide are not included in the total number of slides.

Support your presentation with 2-3 scholarly resources.

**_Note:_** _The digital presentation may be added as an artifact to the teacher toolkit you created in ELM-555._

    Assignment Prompt & Instructions

You have just been assigned a "client" who was just released on parole after serving two years of a two-to-five-year sentence for aggravated assault, a conviction that stems from repeatedly striking her boyfriend with a baseball bat.
    **Name**: Theresa Johnson
    **Age**: 27
**Criminal History (past crimes)** – Prostitution, Distribution of a controlled substance, Possession of narcotics, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Public Drunkenness, Simple Assault, Aggravated Assault, Petty Theft, and Check Fraud all starting from age 11.
**Family History** – Stepfather arrested for sexually assaulting Theresa when she was a child, starting at age 10.  Mother was unable to control her, so Theresa was in and out of foster homes along with a number of psychiatric facilities and detention facilities since age 12.
**Substance Abuse** – Primarily Heroin and Alcohol dependence since adolescence.
**Treatment History** – 4 unsuccessful court-ordered Inpatient treatment programs. (Removed from one facility for inappropriate sexual advances toward a male counselor; Removed from another facility for smuggling Oxycontin into the facility; Removed from a 3rd facility for a "hot urine" for alcohol, meth, and Xanax, and lastly, the most recent removal was for leaving the facility without permission.
**Psychological History** –Diagnosed with Antisocial Personality Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) stemming from years of physical and sexual abuse perpetrated by her stepfather starting at age 10 until the father's arrest when she was 12.
**What conditions would you "require" while she is on parole, and why? Be extremely specific and detailed when responding.  You have several "issues" to contend with, so think outside the box by applying your critical thinking / problem solving skills when determining the conditions of parole.**

    **## LABRIVER8.docx**

    A
**drainage basin**, or watershed, is the total area that is drained by a river or stream. The stream itself is made up of a
**trunk** (main channel) and its tributaries.
**Tributaries** are smaller streams that flow into a larger one. A
**meandering river** is a single channel in a valley which has many curves. These curves develop because the land is flat, so the river cannot flow very fast – but at the same time there is more water to move. The way that the energy of this moving water is expended is by having the river curve around itself over and over – this makes the river longer, and thus able to accommodate the water. It is called a meandering river because over time, the river “wanders” back and forth across its floodplain (meandering means wandering). The outside of a meander loop is called the
**cutbank**, because the water cuts into it and erodes it back. The inside of a meander loop is called the
**point bar**, and this is an area where slower moving water drops sediment, building up a sandy bank over time. This slowly moves the meander loops into wider and wider forms. Sometimes these meander loops will erode far enough that they intersect. When this happens, the water in the river will start to flow preferentially into the straighter part of the channel, and the water in the loop slows down and begins to drop its sediment. Over time, the meander is cut off completely. A cut-off meander loop that still holds water is called an
**oxbow lake**. If the water eventually dries up and the oxbow fills with sediment, it is called a
**meander scar**. In this way, the river moves back and forth across the floodplain. The main feature of a
**braided river** is that it is made up of several channels interconnecting over and over within a valley. Alternately, you might think of it as a single channel with lots of
    **sand bars** or
    **islands**.

A few other concepts that are useful to know in river systems are gradient, velocity, discharge, base level and load.
**Gradient** is the slope of the river – or the vertical drop in elevation over distance. We generally express it as feet per mile or meters per kilometer. Gradient is usually steepest near the
**headwaters** (start of the river) and lowest near the
    **mouth** (end of the river).
**Velocity** is how quickly the river is moving. We measure this as feet per second, or meters per second.
**Discharge** is the amount of water in a channel. We measure this using the formula Q=WxDxV/2. This is the width of the river, times the depth of the river, times the velocity; then the total is divided by two. Finally, the
**load** of a river is the sediment that the river is transporting. This is dependent upon the available sediment and how easy it is to erode and transport, as well as gradient, discharge and velocity. The maximum load a river can carry is called its
    **capacity**.
